DO NOT GET END UP IN A BIRD HOUSE:

I am an ordained minister of religion, I become a patient care tech years ago, and use it as additional income. Since I had three children in university, the extra money came in handy. Now I work two double shift and one single. The rest of the weak I go to school trying to get a doctorate degree in another field. Over a period of nine years I have gather a lot of information which could help nurses, nursing homes, CNA and other health care workers.

GREAT REWARDS:

Working as a CNA can carry a lot of rewards. It can help you to meet people in high places, just by taking care of their old relative. One lady I know was given $10.000 by one resident to go back to nursing school. One patient heard that I was driving my car that have 300.000 miles on it back and forth to florida, and ask his daughter to give me his car, which was practically new.

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT ALL FIND AND DANDY AS IT SEEM:

A nurse or CNA could loose their license in one day, and get arrested if they are not careful. You could get suspended from work, with are without pay, base on one resident complain. One person was suspended pending investigation, the investigation take one year to complete. If you do not work in the field for a complete year, you will have to receive new training. By the time his investigation was over he need to be retrained. If a patient do not like you they could make up a story about you, they could say you slap them, are was verbally abusive. At the same time it could have happen, but not by you. The patient could actually be talking about somebody who slap them ten years ago.

DEALING WITH PREJUDICE PATIENTS:

One of the first problem a black person will encounter while being a CNA is prejudice patient with prejudice relative. If you face with this problem you will have to know what to do immediately are your license and freedom will not worth a rat's tail. The people of the prejudice sixties are the ones we have in many nursing homes today, and they feel the same way.

WHAT TO DO:

As you received your assignment, you must go into all the rooms and meet your patients. Introduce yourself to each. If they do not want you as their nurse, they will tell you right there. If you is a man, they might say "I do not let men take care of me" You need to go back to the nurse in charge and get the assignment fix. If the nurse tell you to swap the patient with another CNA, Do not swap patient. Let them fix the assignment. If you swap the patient, without the assignment being corrected, that patient still remain your patient on paper. If that patient is being broken up, guess what! you going down. The assignment paper is a legal document. I keep all my assignment for at least three months. Many time my butt is save by it. I was able to bring it out and show that I never have certain patient in my care. All blacks look alike to some people.

A PATIENT IN BED:

A patient being in a bed does not necessarily mean that the patient belong in that room. When a patient is dead are relocated, the patient name suppose to be remove from the door, the chart suppose to be remove from the adl books.

Dietary suppose to be informed, so the patient food stop coming to that floor. In some cases none of this happen. A new patient is move into the room, the original patient's name is still on the door, the new patient does not have on a name band, the old patient chart is still in the adl book, the assignment papers is not update.

If you is a cna coming from a agency and did not know what happen, you will assumed that, that patient in bed is the same one as on the assignment. The patient is going to get the wrong kind of food, the wrong injection, and all the other bad luck stuff that goes along with it. Now you will be in trouble, only because somebody did not do their job.

DEALING WITH PREJUDICE CO-WORKERS:

In today world, people suppose to get diversity training before they come on the job, it will not stop them from being a racist, but it will show them how to control it on the job. A man has the right to be whatsoever, he want to be. However, for the patient sake racist feelings should be left at home. In trying to spite a co-workers, could just spill over to hurt innocent patients. Keep a record of all racist actions, comments and bad actions. Then make a written complain. If nothing is done about it, and the harassment continue, you might need to contact your lawyer, and they will advice you what to do from there. Working under harassment was not design to make you do a better job, it was design to cause distraction, which will make you administered bad care to patients.

DEALING WITH A PATIENT WHO IS LOOKING FOR TROUBLE:

People are trying to sue nursing homes, this is easy money. Any body can cry abuse. Some patient family set them up, and tell them what to do. Suing nursing homes is now a business.

Never get into an argument with a patient, and if it happen, make the patient win. Because if you win, you loose big time. By you winning the attitude fight, that will put the patient into a "Spiting moods" The patient will not try to spite you. The patient always right in the eyes of the government. The patient must not see any disrespect in you. You must remember the nursing homes is the patient home. It is you that is in their home, treat them with respect. As a nursing assistant, you became the mud hard, the scape goat. The ones to wash the blames off on. Do not be stupid. As you assist the nurses, do not be covetous of them, they put in their study. Therefore, give them their respect. Watch their backs, try to protect them, and they will protect you.

WALKING OFF THE JOB:

Walking out on the job after turning up at work is abandonment of patient, a nursing home can report you and have your license zap. However, there are time when walking out can be justifiable. If you are sick you can ask to be sent home. If you want to run, you just have to find away to make yourself sick. And make sure you bring some kind of doctors letter the next day. If you were sick why don�t you go to a doctor? I turn up a t a nursing home with sixty beds. Two nurse and two CNA on duty. One of the CNA fake sick and went home. The nurse in charge was a Jamaican nurse, we could not play any trick that she did not know. So my self an another little black nurse get stuck with the sixty patients. When the shift was over we were walking like a beat up dog. If you have to run, do not let your anger make you run stupidly. If you have to run at least pull your pants up.
