Review by James Wilson
Well here goes my short review of this show. Song by song reviews can be pretty boring, so I'll just note some highlights. This was my third incident. I had high expectations going in, since I had heard a lot of good stuff on CD-R recently. The crowd seemed about the same as the previous shows at the American. I'm not sure whether it sold out or not, if it did it was near the start of the show. Pretty good vibe from the people and the security. Never saw any problems go down. The security didn't seem to mind that someone was video taping the show from right in front of the stage. That surprised me. Anway, on to the show. The "Smile" opener kind of surprised me. I don't really see this as being a good opener type song, but it was a nice standard version and one of my favorite songs for that matter. Most of the rest of the set is pretty cloudy from there. Wow, that's pretty bad. I only got through the first song.
Personal Note: Don't drink two beers right before the show starts, because then you have to pee the entire first set and hence your enjoyment is reduced.
The "Lost > Come as you are" was pretty sweet if I remember correctly, but at this point I was just wanting to get to the bathroom. 1:30 !!! That's a long first set! I'm used to those short first sets Phish has been pumping out lately. Overall, the first set was very solid. Good, tight jamming. I was stoked for the second set. Needless to say the setbreak for me consisted of going to bathroom and then returning to the lower floor to discover it was about twice as crowded and my spot right up front was lost. Oh well....Highlights from the second set: During "Jellyfish" they all took a pull from a bottle of Teuquila. This was pretty funny and gave a nice little dancing break. "Land's End > San Jose" was definetly the highlight here for me. For some reason I was expecting the Mountain Girls encore, and was happy to hear it. It was nice to see the boys end the show with some bluegrass. Great second set. Very long. There was some funky jamming in there as well as a little ambient stuff. Overall I was very pleased with the show. My physical condition that night (being tired and having to take a whiz) probably kept me from giving it a four star rating, but nevertheless it was a great show and may have even convinced the Nooch to give them a little more credit.
