Guster ~ 3/28/00 @ Mississippi Nights

By Jon Bruner

Well, it was definitely a younger crowd than I expected last night. My gf and I are 27 and I'd bet at least 2/3 of the crowd paid the $2 surcharge, not that there's anything wrong with that. A big Wash U. turnout, it seems. Anyway, they have an interesting sound with the two guitars (midi equipped) and the bongo drummer. The drummer was the highlight of the show for me. We sat at a table on the side of the stage (stage right?) by the stage door. We were actually behind the two guitar players. The drummer stands and plays a set of bongos and cymbals mainly with his hands. It was fun to watch. Besides that, the music reminded me of the stuff people listened to when I was in college (Samples, Big Head Todd, etc.). So, the tunes were alright, but didn't really take me too far. I'm no musician, but there was a lot of guitar "strumming," instead of playing individual notes or solos (does this make sense?). The drummer had a couple solos, but they weren't long enough. At one point, they played a drum beat over the PA, then started playing over it. That surprised me, then I wondered if they were doing it for other songs. Speaking of covers, they did that "All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray" song (the title excapes me). They also mentioned they saw Foo Fighters/Red Hot Chili Peppers the night before in Carbondale, then did a short 2-song/1-verse-each type RHCP medley. For the last encore, the drummer stepped and sang that "Kiss Me (under the moonlit sky)" song. It was pretty funny as he couldn't hit the high notes if he tried. So, in conclusion, I had a pretty good time, but if I would've paid the $12 admission (and not my gf) I probably would've been a little dissappointed. Not really my cup of tea, but YMMV.
