Mar. 22nd ~ Sector 9 / Static Circus @ Cicero’s

By James Mullins

Hey all, damn good show last night, both Static and Sector 9 played very well. If I remember right Sector 9 only stopped playing ONCE during the entire set with no set break. Unfortunatly the band does not normally give board patches (!!) which no one knew until we got there. I DID however have a release form which the band signed and gave Lance permission to plug in which means the Sector 9 material will be KDHX exclusive. I may try to figure out how to run the show so that folks can still at least get an FM of it.

Here's the setlist according to the band:

Monkey Music
Frequency>
And Some Are Angels>
Boxaphone>
Dance (remix)>
Moonsocket (Drum & Bass)

Speaking of Static Circus, they came out last night and debuted their new "permanent" keyboard player. I believe his name was Gino. He has a bigger keyboard setup than Jon Brown did, and his style isn't nearly as Medeski-ish. Perhaps it's simply because he's new, but he seemed hesitant at times to take the lead. If memory serves, he only really took charge a couple of times late in the set where Brown used to basically conduct the band from his seat behind the keyboard. The trumpet player (Ross?) now seems to be the band leader. I spoke with the guitarist in the back of the club later that night and he did indeed confirm that Gino (again, I think that's his name) was a permanent addition to the band. They played their usual brand of fusion/jazz and Hollis even used his didj during a tune. I'm sorry I don't have a setlist, but thus is the nature of seeing Static Circus. Anywho, I dug them even with the new keyboard player and I'm sure they'll still be a cool part of the scene for a while to come.

Wow, I didn't mean to write so much. Uh.. Sector 9 was cool too... about two hours solid of techno/electronica/whatever-sounding tunes and jams that really did keep the listener attentive despite the long set. I'm off to class now, so that's probably all from me today. Everybody have a good one...
