I've heard quite a few people say they really like the big wu, and when i saw that they were playing in lawrence for $5.00, i figured why not.... i get a day off work, live music and a road trip : ) So, we got there at 8 because all the shows i've gone to recently started around 9. There was no one there.... 9:00... there's about 10 people there. I was looking at the shirts and posters, and the singer from the opening band, Fighting Gravity, told me i should sign up for the mailing list. I looked at the poster and at the guy, then back at the poster and then the guy again.... it's the same guy : ) At about 10:00, the opening band starts playing to a crowd of 15-20. Everyone is sitting down. About 1/2 way through the set, the singer tells us that it's ok to get up and dance, so a few people did. They were ok... they were a southern ska band, and almost all their songs sounded exactly alike... After their set, i went back to the shirt table and got a big wu shirt... and noticed that the guy with dreds from big wu was sitting right next to the table. I didn't talk to him, because what do you say to someone in a band if you've only heard one of their songs about 3 times. So anyway, they start around 11:30, and the only 2 songs I knew were cover songs. I thought they were pretty good, though the only songs i really remember were shantytown and half past one, which they finished at 1:30. It was pretty cool seeing everyone turn to look at the clock, notice that it was half past one while they were playing half past one, then telling their neighbor to look at the clock. The setlist on the big wu website is missing the encore, which i think i remember hearing something about a kangaroo. The only thing that sucks about road trips to shows is the road trip home at 2 am.
