Phish ~ 6/30/99 @ Sandstone Amphitheatre, Bonner Springs, Kansas

Review by Jerry Iannucci

The Ride:
Nice and quick, except I got lost in KC when accidently got off of 70 and onto another highway. When I got off that one, there was no way to get back on and I have to drive around for a half hour looking for 70 again. I guess getting a Maze was appropriate for that.

The Venue:
Sandstone was a pretty cool venue. No cops that I could see and barely any security. I brought some nice beers with me but forgot to bring a cup so I was a little worried about losing my drink. Luckily, nobody cared. Nobody got hassled about beers and vending was in full swing. I bought a few shirts, but couldn't find any of the good stuff no matter how much I walked around.

It rained. We got wet. Made Gin an appropriate opener. It was a pretty nice light rain for almost the whole time we were in the lot, but then it downpoured for about 15 min. I'm glad I didn't go in early cuz I just sat in my car during that (Sandstone has no roof).

Set I:
The tickets said the show started at 7:30. I figured this meant 8:00 in Phish time. They started at 7:30. Luckily I was parked within throwing distance of the gate so I only missed about half of Gin. It was a pretty sweet one though. I ended up going to the wrong section and found my self with a beautful view of the band.

Gin was good. Farmhouse was good. I got really excited when they played Tube. I actually got that at Riverport last year but really appreciated it this time. Back on the Train was really enjoyable too.

Break:
I went and found my actual seat during the set break, but it was filled with some undesirables. It was a little uncomfortable, so I split. Ran into a few people I knew which was nice.

Set II:
I thought i'd try and get to where I sat for the first set, but just ended up standing in the aisle a few rows in back of it. Like I said, there was no security so it was cool and the view was great.

I like Coil, but I like it better at the end of a set or as an encore. Nothing real special here. Free was awesome! Simple was fun. I'm not a big Swept>Steep fan, but it was nice.

Piper! I really like this song for some reason. I boogied like crazy. I wasn't real familiar with the song when they did it on Haloween (I didnt even notice it) so I was really able to appreciate it this time. I got the feeling that people around me were still unfamiliar with this. They didn't do as much with it as they have in the past, but it was still nice to hear.

After Piper they played a new song which was really good. I'm guessing that's the one called "Bug". However, after this was finished they stopped for a minute and did a awesome ambiant jam for at least 10 minutes. Real nice stuff and one of the better opportunites for Chris to play with his lights. Stash was nice, but not great.

Encores:
Ouch. Most people dont like Bouncing anywhere in a set, but for an encore? I knew there had to be more. I so wanted a Hood. And then Sample? It was better than I thought, but still...

In short, I dont think Phish does bad shows. I wasn't expecting anything epic so I wasn't really diappointed. I've been spoiled by the few shows that I have been to.

I found some friends and hung around the lot for an hour. Lots of fireworks and tasty pizza. I got in my car at 12:30, got out of the parking lot at 2:00. A little after Columbia it poured! White-knuckled, unblinking, heavy traffic, hydroplaning, scary ride home.
