| JAM 2000 - The Dunes/Cape Schank - James Abbott The 2000 JAM will be remembered for its false start. It was due to take place on the Gold Coast in April, then May, then July, then August, then October, then November then finally December. All in all the dates changed more times than Imelda changes her shoes. you work it out. It was a warm Saturday on December 9 that greeted the JAMers as they mingled at the first preparing to set off for the belated JAM 2000. Avery, 98 &99 winner teed off first followed by Mackie, Gibbons & Abbott. The lies were determined and pairing sorted, Abbott was to test Avery & Gibbons to face Mackie. Handicaps had been rather kind in the past, and this year was no exception. Abbott, considered the better of the four, gave Mackie 6 (Ned freakin Kelly), Avery 12 (robbed by a PRAM fit-up to prevent the hat-trick) & Gibbons 18, yes you read that correctly 18!! Can you believe he cried foul at the PRAM (pre round annual meeting) the guy was chasing a handicap in the twenties? Get a grip! The Dunes was in fine nick, Bonus points went to Mackie longest & straightest drives, Gibbons nearest to the pin. Points at the end of day one were not greatly spread. Mackie 12.5, Abbott 10, Gibbons 8.5 and Avery 8. An interesting result was Abbott who for the second time in a row faced Avery on day one. The previous year he was beaten like a red headed stepchild 3.5 to 14.5, boy he wouldve been carrying some demons from 99. For some it was back to the house for R&R, for one Jam member it was Hand Brake duty in Melbourne. Day two was sticky and overcast. Cape Schanck was the venue and pressure was on Abbott to stop Mackie bolting into the distance. Gibbons & Avery were almost perched on Abbotts shoulder every time Abbott swung his club, willing him to close down the expectant father. Some spectacular golf was played on day two; on one particular par 4 Abbott was on the green in two, Mackie had managed to enjoy the hole from many varied results of the golf shot. He found himself 30 meters from the flag with an uphill chip to a rise at the rear of the green, it then ran hard down to the pin. Mackie made the shot for a 5, Abbott missed his putt for birdie and walked off absolutely robbed after parring the hole! Two holes later the nearest-the-pin bonus was up for grabs. Mackie was miles from the pin, he had to use a theodolite to read his putt. Avery was pretty close, Gibbons found the trees and Abbott found the fringe, although Abbott was 10 feet inside Avery, the point was awarded to Avery. Abbott challenged the Par threes all day knocking two to within ten feet, four putting on one of them, and knocking the ball to two feet on another par three. Points again were evenly spread kinda like Gibbons demeanour that ranged from Jolly to downright filthy and everything in between. Gibbons does wear his heart on his sleeve when it comes to golf. He is capable of having a sizzling round playing with a big smile and being rather convivial. He can however, have a shocker and his vocabulary diminishes to whos next?, #$%#, #$%##$^ #$%#, #$%# #$%#^* & ^^#$%^&%. The day ended with Mackie pipping Abbott and Avery getting the sour Gibbons. Bonus points went to Gibbons for longest drive, Avery for nearest pin & straightest drive, again no monster putt or spontaneous moment but there shouldve been a bit of furrowing. Day two combined scores Mackie 23, Avery 19.5, Gibbons 18, Abbott 17.5. This was the most closely contested JAM in years. Side fact, the round took 5h45m Day three was back at The Dunes. A beautiful sunny Monday had been booked and it was delivered with a smile. Abbott was to tackle Gibbons and Avery attempted to stop a rampaging Mackie, good luck Mic! Abbot had made two predictions the evening before during a five-hour round of cards. Abbott would shoot 80 and Avery would come apart at the thirteenth. Avery decided to prove the theory of him coming apart at thirteen only twelve holes earlier. Mic fairly blew to bits at the first and the mind took over from there. Nothing went right for Mic who managed to score just 3.5 points for the day. Abbott giving Gibbons a MASSIVE eighteen shots tied 9 each. Abbott fell two shots short of his prediction with an 82. The round couldve been in the seventies as Abbott had 3 birdie putts on line stop perilously close to the hole. Some marvellous shots were displayed on day three particularly by Abbott who picked up the nearest-to-pin bonus by knocking the ball to two feet as he had done the previous day. No one could stop Mackie, who took the JAM for just his second time. He was thrilled with his victory. I have played a shit load of golf over the past two months, Dad is sorting out Portsea membership, I screwed them at the handicapping table, I couldnt be happier. Oh yeah, Im about to become a father too said Mackie. It had been a very slim pickings for Mackie who has not tasted victory since the inaugural JAM way back in 1994. JAM 2001 will move back to the Murray to tackle the challenging Murray Downs. JAM 2000 Winner Mackie 38.5 (Mic is responsible for this massive victory.)
