| JAM 1994 - Rich River - James Abbott Year One of the JAM was played at Rich River on its 36-hole layout. The more established course, the old course, offered a great selection of challenging holes, tricky greens and established flora. In sharp contrast, the new course was a shocker, with its underdeveloped, boring fairways, young greens and a complete lack of interest, except for a water hazard on one of the par threes that did swallow a few balls. The winner of the first JAM was Sam Mackie, a strapping young gent now residing in Blairgowrie. Mackie showed the other JAMers a clean pair of golf shoes as he streaked into the lead on day one, and he was never headed. His Black Shark one iron, known as Black Death for its irregularity of ball flight, proved to be the difference. All JAMers had to endure very tough eating conditions at the local bistro, an abundance of poker machines, the local lads, and a rather pesky course superintendent who sped around on his motorcycle handing out unwanted advice on how to hurry up. This advice was often suggested during one's backswing ... WHACK ... #$$@. See you later, Rich River, may you pester all who play upon you, for as sure as shit you won't see the JAM again - and what is with that ridiculously large golf ball? 1995 |
