| Just thinking about these books makes me smile. I greatly admire Roverson's ability to create such lovable and memorable characters as Tiger and Del (especially Tiger), and yet write a compelling and exciting series using only two main characters. Del, a northerner with a mission to save her abducted brother's life, ventures into the desert heat (and chauvanist atmosphere) of the south where she meets the legendary sword-dancer, Tiger. The two become partners -- Del quite a bit more reluctantly than her companion -- and venture through the South, North, and even faraway nations on various adventures. The interaction between these two characters is amusing, to say the least, and the narrations by Tiger are nothing short of hilarious. However, the stories are serious and evoke strong emotions from readers (even from Jake, he'll grudgingly admit). This wonderful series is one of the best in its genre I have ever read and I would recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone. The books are nearly stand-alone (I, myself, read them out of order), so if you're unsure about the series, I'd suggest grabbing Sword-Singer from Borders' shelf and start reading the first chapter. If you're not hooked by Tiger's playful narrations, well, I'm not really sure what's wrong with you. I give the series an A- for its ability to make any reader grin. |
