| AAAAAAGH!!!!! Any series that long ought to be shot! But, hey, it wasn't bad, all in all. Just parts of it were. It started off really well, then fell in a crack after the infamous David books, then finally picked back up with the last three or four. For the most part, the Megamorphs and other random books are good, but don't touch an Alternamorph even if your life depends on it! Bad Applegate!!! Anyway, on with the summary. Five human kids (Jake, Cassie, Rachel, Tobias, and Marco) and one Andalite kid (Aximili, or Ax), an alien, join together to fight the Yeerks, a species of parasitic aliens that are threatening not only the human race, but the entire galaxy. The unlikely group of heros together "morph" into different animals as their sole weapon against the advanced alien species. The series records all of their adventures from the day they gain this strange weapon unto the end of the war with the Yeerks. The underlying moral of the story is comradery and leadership. There is a pretty dark side to the series; the characters undergo incredible stress at being thrown into such a terrible situation with no way to seek help (the Yeerks enslave humans; there is no way to tell if a human has been infested and is an enemy). The characters are developed nicely and the plot has wonderful twists and turns. The main problem with the series though, is length. With any series as long as that, there are bound to be dud books. Animorphs is no exception. However, if you are looking for something below adult level, this series is well worth your time. You may want to skip a few, though, not to mention the first chapter. After all that, I suppose I'll give it a grade of B+. Not the best series I've ever read, but, after all, it kept me entertained for six years. |
