I was wondering what everyone thought about the differences between Destination and Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind. I've researched both and I am trying to see what people think and why for my own benefit of understanding. I was interested in creatin a team for next year possibly also in Wisconsin. There is one currently in Div. IV which I could not make a commitment to this year, but I want to arrange something early. Let me know what you think about either question. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I am at sophomore at college and took a break from the OM scene during my freshman year after being on a time for five years straight. But I am ready to roll now and am looking to start a team. However, the SGA here won't admit the club un il November at the earliest. If anyone has any advice on starting a team or getting in touch with someone who can let us register late, please email me and let me know. I could use all the help I can get. Thanks!!

Does anyone know exactly what is going on with the business of OM? Is world finals going to happen this year? All that I have been hearing are sketchy reports and half-answers. Please, if you know what is going on e-mail me, or post it here.

We are currently advising all teams not to send in the registration money to OM yet. There are some legal issues pending, and until these get resolved, no money should go to OM. thanks Sue Welsch Division IV Coordinator

I just graduated from HS and I'm a little nervous about going away to college soon. Okay, I'm a lot nervous because I'm a kind of shy person. But I love OM and I think continuing in Div. IV would make me more secure. The thing is- I haven't been on a te m since ninth grade. I've been on the coaching end of a team for the last three years. I really want to be on a team again. Could someone from DIV IV drop me a line with some advice on making/keeping/succeeding with a team? I would appreciate it!

Having WF at UTK was much better than at Disney, with the exception of the housing. The Radisson was ok, but as Ryan mentioned the food left a lot to be desired. The first night (and I think the next day for lunch) we were supposed to eat in the hotel re taurant. I'm vegetarian, and there was nothing aside from salad that was meatless. For the rest of the week, our options were to eat 1) at the presidential court (which was standard issue dorm food, but at least has some options), 2) at some thing outsid the Convention Center (horrible. All it was was BBQ), 3) back at the hotel (not good either. Everything there was very unhealthy). But anyway ... my main issue with the housing was that they said they wanted to house D4 separate from D3, which is why m team couldn;t have my younger brother's D3 team stay on our floor. But I had friends that ended up with D1 kids across from them. If they aren't going to completely separate D4, then they should at least let us stay with our state. Overall, tho, WF wa pleasant. It seemed that everyone was really friendly and it didn't feel as "cut-throat" as D3 was (at least in structure).

Hay people. Woundering how World Comitition was. Well, it was GREAT!!! I was in the Division 4 O my Fair Shackspear( I mispelled it, Oh well). But we came in 7th. And we were a small town group competing against major universities. No joke. We only have 00-400 students in our college. And we came in 7th in world. We were the group who had the giant head. No joke! Our skit was about the first dentist( american born). So we had some very enjoyable parodies. But, what can I say. It was a blast. I never met o many different people. Got a couple of address. And plan on writing all of them. If we could do it again, we'd hve a little more time to practice, we didn't practice much. We did great for the time we did. Also, we needed to do beter on the spontanious We did horable on that. Tennesse University was awsome. I've never been to that big of a campus before. The hotel, the radison, well it was nice, but the food needed a bit of work. Sometimes it was hot, others it wasn't even cooked. That stunk. We had fu though. I remember a lot of people, but one inparticular. since it was the last night we were there. Well, the last night the Division 4 students had a party, witch OM provided for. It wasn't that much fun for me. I don't know how to swing dance. and I c uldn't learn that quik. So my group basically sat there and talked to everyone who wasn't out on the dance floor. well, it was around 12:00 wqhen the rest of the group decided to leave. We had a very long trip in front of us in the morning. I didn't want o, so I saw someon just sitting there. She was real cute! I walked up and asked her to dance. She said she didn't know how. I said I didn't either. So she did. I learned her name. Sarah. the funny thing here is she wasn't a division 4 particapant. She was a d-3 particapant. I think it was funny. But who cares. I was out to have fun. After the song. we sat down with her friend and talked. TYou know what the funny thing was. I asked her to dance one mor time, as soon as we hit the floor. They ended the songs for the night! I laughed! But I walked them to their Hotel and talked some more. Then I saw my coaches! We weren't suposed to leave the hotel! A rule since they are responsable for us. If I hadn't gone over and talked to them, They would have never known. But I thought that they saw me, that's why I went over. But who know's. They say they didn't see me. But after that I thought they left so I went and talked some more. Then about 5 minutes later, they were back. They told me they wanted me t walk back wit them. So I did. But not before saying good bye. I had fun. On the trip. even though it was pretty hectic most of the time. Well, if ya want to know more, email me! Later Ry.

I was just wondering if Div IV included both undergraduate and graduate students. I know that there is no age limit, but does it matter what degree that you're working towards? I loved OM in middle and high school, and have been judging to stay involved, nd want to know if that's as involved as I can reasonably get now that I'm a grad student.

Hi... I probably will never find this message board again because I'll never be so luckily clumsy on this thing called the internet... so if someone would email back a response --- I'd be indebted for life (as long as there's no physical labor involved! : Anyhow, I'm somewhat of a unique circumstance -- USC in LA is starting an OM membership next year (the club tried to startup this year but didn't go perfectly) ... And I was thinkin' about joining. The only problem is... I was reading my school program ru ebook -- and it said that to be a member of a DivIV team, one must have a HS diploma or a GED -- I don't. I'm going USC a year early -- I'm a junior in HS now... will be a freshman in college as well as a senior in HS at the same time there next year... B t will be enrolled full time... Is it ok for me to be a member of their team? Thanks!

Hey y'all...I was just thinking...Next year, I'm going to be taking half days at Akron University as a High School senior...I believe that would make me eligible for a Div IV team. I haven't been able to get one going at my high school this past couple y ars, and would love to do it again. My question for y'all is if you know of any Div IV teams in Ohio, best of all, near Akron, that would be interested in another team member next year. Thanks!

someone asked "but is there any chance that information on starting a div IV team could get its own page instead of OM members having to sort through pages and pages of old messages?" A reminder- if you go to the Div IV Home page http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/9852/diviv.html you will find there are articles there that might provide what you need- there are also instructions on how to join the Div IV listserver. Also- to Sarah Sell- yes you can have team members from other schools on your team under one membership.

Hey, everybody...I've been looking through FAQ and the bulletin boards, and the question of "my friends and I loved OM in high school and want to do it again in college, how can we do this?" seems to be running rampant here as the "baby boomers" of OM all hit college age. My team finds ourselves in this quandary as well. I know the free time at the college level is not profuse, but is there any chance that information on starting a div IV team could get its own page instead of OM members having to sort th ough pages and pages of old messages? Just wondering.

I have been active on Div II and III teams for the past few years and am used to a total OM experience. Next year I will be in college and am hoping to be on a Div IV team. How does the experience differ from high school? Where do you work and store ma erials? Where do you get the tools to work with? Do Div IV teams present at Regionals or State Competations? I don't know very much about Div IV, but hey, mabey I'll see some of you next year at Worlds ( if I am lucky.) Thanks, Kirsten.

Thanks, Chris, for clarifying about the $1600 fee. I have never known anybody to pay this because everybody stays in OM housing because it is such a good deal. Besides, it is part of the whole OM experience. The meals are great in Tennessee and it is al you can eat at every meal. We get the best rooms, because we get hotel rooms rather than dorms. Believe me, it is worth every penny to have the time of your life and be with all the other Division IV OMers. SUE

In response to "what is up with this $1600 registration fee for teams going to Worlds and not staying in OM housing? is this a usual practice?" Actually, this IS the same as it always has been. Nothing new and especially not new just to torture Div IV! Th rates are the same as they have ever been for the hotel rooms we are being given- as they have been for dorms in past- so there is nothing new there either. Look at: Package #2 (Wednesday dinner thru Sunday breakfast) is set at $335.00. That is CHEAP f r room and board- it is only $50.00 to add on a package for an early arrival (Monday) or a late stay (Sunday evening). Those are the "normal" WF rates and I am so glad not to have to deal with WDW and all those monetary hardships and restrictions from bein there. I don't think you can get much cheaper than what was quoted by Sue- and looking at my notes from first WF we attended in 1993- this is not much more than we paid back then so it seesm like a reasonable raise on the part of the organization. Div IV teams actually get their own BEDS,a non-communal BATHROOM and ALL THE FOOD THEY CAN EAT for over four days...sounds pretty good to me for $335.00! (Which isnt to say any of us really have any money to go! It IS hard to raise funds in Div IV)

what is up with this $1600 registration fee for teams going to Worlds and not staying in OM housing? is this a usual practice? does the OM governing board realize that we have very limited funding? apparently, this decision was fueled by a deep hatred for division 4 OMers- are we expected to hold down a full load of classes, a job, solve a problem, and fundraise over $2,000? this seems excessively harsh for teams that are just starting out and do not have school funding yet. why does OM want us to stay in heir housing so badly? if they do, why not make it cheaper- like as cheap as it would be to stay in a hotel on our own? my team figured out that we could do the OM experience for $700 total (only travel, hotel + food expenses). this is not an exorbitant f e- we are all college students and we could see spending $120 each for a really cool 5 day vacation. but now we are facing a severe lack of funds and may not be able to attend Worlds, unless we all drop out of school and start working full time, in which ase we would not be eligible to participate anyway. so that would be pointless. we all have a great love of OM, as we have been participants for a combined total of 48 years (in a 6 member team) and we have also been judges for regional competitions. we l ke OM, and we want to participate as fully as possible. so why is the OM board making it impossible?

Question for all you knowledgeable types out there. In order to be on a Div IV team, you have to be enrolled full-time in college. Can students from other colleges be part of your OM program? My school doesn't have OM, (someone tried to start it here but there's too much red tape) and I know myself (as w ll as a few friends) would like to join a team. Is it legal for us to join a team at a neighboring university? PS. If anyone from Princeton is out there with info, please respond. Thanks! Melissa

Tina, It is entirely possible for one school to have two teams in the same problem- but if they do - then the school much have TWO memberships. i know this question was asked a long time ago, but i don't think that there will be a world finals held at central michigan university ever again...there are just too many OM-ers at worlds now. they have had (michigan) state finals at CMU for the past fe years and there is not enough room for even that many kids there. last year they would not let my mom and dad into rose arena to watch the awards ceremony because it was already overcrowded- and it was still an hour before the ceremony!

Actually, if you liked it at Disney (and I will admit, Disney was trying really hard to accommodate us) you will absolutely LOVE it at UT this year. Holding WF on a college campus is IMHO more fun than at Disney, because at Disney there's too much distra tion. You don't really get to see other competitions because they're so far away and plus (in my case) you'd rather go see Disney World. Plus I also think UT is one of the nicest campuses they've ever held WF at. Of course, if they were to hold WF in N rman, I'd have to change that statement..... :-)

I thought Disney World was a GREAT place to hold world finals! It was the first time to go for everyone on my team, and we all had a blast. I will never forget that week, and I hope to be able to go again someday. World Finals should definately be held t Disney again.

Just a quick point - If someone has graduated from High School, they may not be on a Division III team. Division IV has no age restrictions. You must be a full-time college student. Military eligibility has been eliminated this year.

Also, please don't forget to have your name added to the networking page if you wish to have people contact you in regards to starting an OM program or joining your program. The Networking page can be found by clicking the link above.

Greetings...This past school year my past team mates and I started to O.M. program at or school. We found the hardest part of having O.M. here was the fund raising so that we may attend World. Last year we caught a lucky break and had a high school team make it, so we kinda hitched a ride with them. However this year the teams that have a chance to go to state donn't look that promising at all. So my question is what is the best way to raise money, at a Div IV lvl? Any possible ideas would be graciuos y accepted. Thanks, Ryan Strom C.W.C.O.M.

Rick, Your Div IV level members cannot move back down to Div III and the catch, unlike shifting members within divisions I, II, or III, is that all Div IV participants have to be enrolled full-time n college or be active members of the military. (That is the wa I read it: you may want to check your rulebook; it gives specifics on those who are eligible for Div IV) If the new collegiates cannot get a membership formed on campus, they may want to consider coaching or helping out at tournaments (either in their university's region, their home region, or both) as a way to stay involved in OM. Past team members can be s me of the best contributors to any tournament and I am sure the director would welcome their contributions.

Can any one out there tell me if having a level IV member on a level III team is legal or not I [we] would be grateful. See, recently, two members of our team graduated high school and went to college. But, neither of their respective universitied have n O.M. program to which they can participate in.

I HOPE THAT I HAVE NOT STARTED SOMETHING THAT I WILL REGRET. DON'T DO A VIRTUAL OM TEAM unless you are an experienced OMer and you just can't find a team. The best part of OM is getting to the first tournament and with a virtual OM team, you are complet ly changing that. Speaking as an experienced coach, (my first Div. I team is now in college) and as a participant, the best part of OM is sitting down with your team and learning how to work together. OM is a great test of teamwork, you can have a great solution but if yo don't have teamwork it will show. It will come out both on the performance floor and in spontaneous. Working TOGETHER as a team is one of the best experiences you can have and a virtual team changes that all around. If you don't learn how to work toge her long-distance, it will be a disaster. As a professional software engineer, I work all the time with people I have never met. We have the same types of issues such as communication and respecting points-of-view, but if I hadn't had to learn how to work with others face-to-face, I might not be able to do it long distance. Chris of UIUC & CLC makes a couple of very good points that I would like to echo. OM is a commitment and it might be too easy to not live up to it in a virtual sense. When virtuality turns to reality there needs to be substance. To make that happen the e has to be good communication and all members must agree upon a single goal and agree to work toward it. That is called consensus. Five to seven people will never agree completely on something, but they must come to a consensus. I have seen teams that couldn't do that face-to-face. If you decide to form a virtual team please do 2 things: 1) Don't call it VOMIT 2) Keep me informed. I'd like to hear about it.

Chris, Thanks for getting that info about Princeton on the message board. Jim, FYI, PUOM is holding their organizational meeting at noon today and will have a table at the activities fair tomorrow. Classes start on Thursday (yes..their schedule is very late in starting) and everything is beginning to kick into high gear. I know that Stacie has her typical overload of activities again this year and will be very slow in getting back with a timely response. So as PUOM's Pretend Coach, I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the program!

A question was asked recently about whether there was an OM Program at Princeton. I would like to suggest to anyone with similar questions, that they go to the div IV Homepage and scroll down to "links"- there is a place to register your name and school a d any connected web pages. It happens that Stacie Crain from P.U. started a program there last year and besides competing on PU's Marvelous Mentor team taking second place at World Finals- also competed with the UIUC Camouflaged Creation team that took th rd in the World- she was one of the weight crew and did spontaneous! So- Princeton is alive and well as an OM Program (you are so lucky!!!) and you should look for Stacie's name and email address on this message board or contained within the links page. A other place to look is at WF Results for 1998- all Div IV teams and listed which might give you a clue as to whether your school had a membership or not. Also- a caution again about virtual teams...as the first ever (from UIUC) this past year- just be car ful...it takes a lot of dedication and commitment to make that succeed. Just know that and proceed accordingly! I would discuss goals and expectations with anyone that talked to me about doing a team like that. If theirs match with yours- it will probably work out great. This is the time of year that it seems many people "want" to do OM, but life can get "in the way." If anyone signs on to a virtual team, PLEASE realize you have made a major commitment and dont back out at the last minute. The decision to o ahead and attempt to develop a team would be made on the belief that certain people were 1
