"Biography
The story of the Shake Ups began in the early winter days of 2005 when
guitarists Patrick O'Connor and Ed Cho had a chance meeting. Patrick had been
involved in numerous original projects, including bands like In Stitches,
Hipster Zero and Destination: Earth! Ed was a recent transplant from the Chicago
area, where he had played in several bands of his own. They found that they
shared similar tastes in music, and using artists like the Shins, Radiohead, Ted
Leo and Wilco as a starting point, initiated a search for like-minded musicians.
Patrick already had a large selection of original material he had been working
on for such a project, so Ed began adding guitar leads and counter-melodies to
these songs.
Multi-instrumentalist Curtis Wyant, who had previously lent his talents to such
acts as Strawtown Road
entered the fold as the band's bassist shortly thereafter, providing both a wide
range of additional
instrumentation and several original songs of his own.
The final piece of the Shake Ups puzzle was more elusive; the trio auditioned
several drummers, but had a difficult time finding a proper match. A few weeks
into their search, Patrick's wife Kathie volunteered. A veteran of the Indy
music scene and such bands as Film At Eleven, In Stitches, and the
Hand-Me-Downs, Kathie's simple but energetic playing was exactly what the band
needed.
The Shake Ups set about recording a demo and playing their first gigs shortly
thereafter. Their debut EP was released in the Spring of 2005."
