Installing the engine. I opted for a 351W to replace the original 302. Unfortunately the budget did not allow for the roller cam converson and roller rockers. Here you can see the Davis Unified Ignition. This is a really nice set up, just one 12 volt wire to the distributor and your set. No ignition box or coil to mess with.
Here is the engine all finished. It is mostly stock exceot for a high volume water and oil pump, D.U.I. distributor, 140 amp alternator, Edelbrock performer manifold, and holly 600 carb. I would have prefered to have fuel injection but that will have to wait a year or two due to budget constraints.
This is the famed NV4500 tranny (Tim Taylor grunt). With a 5.56 granny gear and 27% overdrive it will be at home on the hiway or trail. It is rated at over 450 ft lbs of torque which is plenty of beef to handle the 351. I was surprised at how easily this tranny was to adapt to the Bronco. An adapter plate between the tranny and bell housing, a special pilot bearing, GM clutch disk, and Ford pressure plate and throw out bearing. Then just slap her in. Plus the new crossmember, courtesy of Wild Horses.
Here is a shot of the Atlas II T-Case. I went with the 4.3 ratio, which added with the tranny and 4.11's is possible to get 100:1 low range. We will see how that works, I figure it should be all I need. In a few years if my bravery increases on the trails, I can always add a Klune V to the mix. Installing this was a bit hard. The problem came from the mounting of the new radius arms. The bolt for the arms just happens to line up dead center of the Atlas. I had to end up turning it around and grinding the head down a bit to get the clearance to install the Atlas. Hope I don't have to pull that bolt any time soon.
Well here it is, all finished and waiting for a body. I opted to go with all stainless hard lines and braided steel soft lines on anything that might come in harms way. So basically anything from the frame rail down. I had not anticipated the cost of these lines in to my budget. Lets just say if i didn't have them I would have my fuel injection.
