Introduction

When I was a little girl, my favorite movie was The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. It stars Dolly Parton as the madam of a brothel in rural Texas, and Burt Reynolds as the tough but well-liked sheriff who dates her in private. Trouble ensues when an expose journalist (played by Dom DeLuise) gets wind of Dollys house of ill repute and demands it be shut down. Burt, torn between the woman he loves and the law he upholds, must decide how to handle the situation.

This is where I learned about love: from a Hollywood musical about singing hookers in the south. From this, I reasoned that love could be complicated or frustrating at times, but it would all get worked out in the end, with plenty of singing, dancing, and costume changes in between.
