Donovan disables her craft with expert marksmanship and captures her after her shuttle has crashed to Earth. Diana is imprisoned and held for trial as humankind spends a year celebrating its victory over the lizards. During the year, the Resistance fighters attempt to put their lives back together. Donovan along with his friend Martin resumes a career in television broadcasting. Julie Parrish goes to work for Nathan Bates (the man responsible for manufacturing the Red Dust) at Science Frontiers. Robin, her father and daughter settle down at a quiet ranch. Elias and Willie open a restaurant--The Club Creole. But Ham Tyler is not content to settle down and is hired by Bates to spring Diana from her prison, so that she can help them unravel the secret of the captured Mothership. The plan, however, goes awry. Diana escapes! She cold-bloodedly murders Martin and signals for her troops from a deep-space tracking station. Donovan and Tyler arrive too late to stop her, and the nightmare begins again! Subplot: While Donovan and Tyler (and others) are pursuing Diana, Elizabeth becomes gravely ill. Her grandfather Robert Maxwell calls Julie for help; but before she can do anything, Elizabeth crawls into a cave and begins a metabolic change. Events are complicated by the fact that Robin has left the ranch for a much-needed rest. Guests: Young Elizabeth-Jenny Beck Martin-Frank Ashmore Robert Maxwell-Michael Durrell Novelization "The Pursuit of Diana" by Allen Wold, NY: Pinnacle Books, 1984. The novel varies from the television episode. We know this as Liberation Day Episode 2: The Visitors Strike Back Telecast November 2, 1984 Writer: Steven E. de Souza Director: Paul Kransy Producers: Dean O'Brien and Garner Simmons Once aboard her command ship, Diana orders the fleet (which has been hiding behind the moon) to attack Earth. Lydia, Diana's second in command, informs her that most of the Fifth Columnists have been executed and the Leader has been informed of Diana's poor progress. Diana is infuriated, yet remains cool and reasons that the Red Dust dies in warmer climates. So that is where she will mount her final attack. The Visitor troops strike Los Angeles and demolish all military resistance (clever use of War of the Worlds footage here). Diana lands at Science Frontiers and orders Bates to turn over the stolen mothership. But Bates is too clever for her. He strikes a bargain to make Los Angeles an open city, with himself as head of the provisional government. Diana really has no choice--Bates has armed himself with a fail-safe doomsday device that will release Red Dust everywhere if she tries to take the city by force. Diana agrees to his terms, but quickly begins plotting to undermine that agreement. She orders the Leader's Triax particle beam to burn the city to cinders. However, the Resistance, led by Donovan and Tyler, seize the Mothership. Robert Maxwell pilots it into a collision with the Triax while the others escape. The two sides are once again locked in a stalemate. Subplot: Elizabeth metamorphosizes into a 17-year-old woman. Willie spots the Mark of Zon on her hand and explains that a child of both worlds is prophesied to unite the people in Preta-na-ma, or peace. Elizabeth is the chosen one! Guests: Robert Maxwell--Michael Durrell Young Elizabeth--Jenny Beck Episode 3: The Deception November 9, 1984 Writer--Garner Simmons Director—Victor Lobl Producer--Dean O'Brien Robin, attempting to make her way back home, meets a young motorcyclist, Kyle Bates, and witnesses the delivery of an important pouch from a downed fighter pilot. Kyle takes her to a place of safety, then takes the pouch to Resistance HQ. Apparently, the World Liberation Front wants to move Elizabeth to New York, and safety, before the Visitors get her. Once Kyle meets Elizabeth, he becomes involved in the Resistance. Realizing the Resistance plans to move Elizabeth, Diana orders Donovan's capture and creates an elaborate deception in order to get the information she needs. The deception is truly ingenious: by way of holographic generators, Diana poses as Julie and convinces Donovan that the war has been over for a year. Her plan goes awry when she gives Donovan a newspaper featuring a clip of Elizabeth as a child and not the 17-year-old woman. Donovan escapes the Visitor legation and foils the alien's plot moments before they can reach Elizabeth. Subplot: Donovan's son Sean is given a commission in Diana's Visitor Guard, while Bates and his son Kyle disagree about the elder's collaboration with the enemy. Guests: Sean--Eric Johnson Howard K. Smith—himself Note: This was the first episode to feature a broadcast from the Freedom Network, in which Howard K. Smith reports about the international progress of the war. Episode 4: "Klaus--The Exterminator" Telecast November 16, 1984 Writer: Bruce Seth Green Director: Brian Taggert Producer: Dean O'Brien Klaus is a master assassin who has been retained by Diana to pursue and terminate anyone committing crimes against the Legation. He is also a guru, or zen master, in charge of training the Visitor Youth Corps to kill. His favorite among the group of young trainees is Donovan's son Sean! When Tyler shows Donovan footage of the Youth Corps' training camp, Mike decides that he must stop the indoctrination of his son. He smuggles himself into the Legation and duels with Klaus to the death for Sean's freedom. Diana interferes and Sean remains in the Visitors' control. Subplot: After mother Robin and daughter Elizabeth are reunited, a struggle for the love and attention of Kyle develops between them. Nathan and Kyle Bates have an argument concerning Elizabeth, and Nathan assigns his personal henchman, Mr. Chiang, to watch his son very closely. Meanwhile, Elizabeth uses her very special powers for the first time! Guests: Sean—Eric Johnson Klaus--Thomas Calloway Mr. Chiang--Aki Aleong Note: Howard K. Smith continued his broadcasts through Episode 12. Episode 5: Visitor's Choice November 23, 1984 and January 25, 1985 Writer: David Braff Director: Gilbert Shilton Producer: Dean O'Brien The Resistance intercepts a communication which reveals that all the Visitor commanders of Processing Units will meet at the Playa Del Mar beachside resort to discuss a new human meat processor-The Encapsulator. Donovan and Julie decide to disrupt the meeting and dispatch Kyle and Tyler to acquire explosives while they contact the local Resistance group in Playa Del Mar. Following a minor but almost deadly misunderstanding, Julie, Donovan, and the locals organize an attack on the Visitor estate. At the meeting Mary Kruger, a notorious Visitor commander, unveils the new processor, which will triple the speed of food production. The device is indeed a deadly one, and Diana is most pleased with its results. She offers a toast and treats the other commanders to an exquisite dinner. During the Resistance's daring nighttime assault, Julie becomes trapped in a freezing chamber and almost prepared for the food processor. She is rescued by Donovan moments before the estate is blown up. The Encapsulator is destroyed and most of the Visitor guests killed. Diana, unfortunately, escapes. Subplot: Kyle is captured while stealing explosives and given by his father to Mr. Chiang for discipline. He is later rescued by Elizabeth, using her extraordinary powers. Guests: Mary Kruger-Sybil Danning Playa Del Mar Resistance Leader: Chad McQueen Mr. Chiang: Aki Aleong Episode 6: Showdown in Rawlinsville November 30, 1984 Writer: David Abramowitz Director: Bruce Seth Green Producer: David Latt The people of the small town of Rawlinsville, inside the Red Dust contaminated area, are being used as slave labor to mine cobalt for a collaborator named Garrison. Since the Visitors need a large supply of cobalt for their final assault on the Earth, he has struck a deal with Diana--1 bar of gold for each ton of cobalt. When a black woman, Glenna, escapes and goes to the Resistance for help, Elias convinces the others that she is sincere. But she betrays them in order to make herself leader of the collaborators, and Donovan, Tyler and the others must use their best resources to escape and prevent the shipment of the precious mineral. Subplot: On the LA mothership, Diana discovers a Visitor doctor praying to a holographic image of Zon. Zon worship is a forbidden religion amongst the Visitors because it speaks of peace and brotherhood. Its practice is punishable by death. Diana feeds the doctor to a crevit (notice the spelling here)--a sand shark. On Earth, Nathan Bates accuses Julie of being a Resistance fighter and has Mr. Chiang deliver evidence. Julie, however, manages to outwit them both. Guests: Glenna: Sheryl Lee Ralph Garrison: Michael Champion Episode 7: Force Field of Doom December 14, 1984 Writer: Paul F. Edwards Director: Walter Grauman Producer: Dan O'Brien Moments before Tyler and Kyle rendezvous with a munitions truck, Diana orders the activation of a new force field that obliterates the vehicle. Her plan is to encircle Los Angeles so that the Visitors control everything going in and out, and the Resistance realizes that, if her plan succeeds, it will spell their doom. While Julie attempts to break the security of the transmitting station at Science Frontiers, Donovan and Tyler go aboard the Mothership and kidnap the Visitor scientist responsible for the force field's creation. They learn that he is a pacifist and a follower of Zon. He is hesitant to help either side, but changes his mind when he meets Elizabeth and recognizes her as "The Chosen One." He sacrifices his life to destroy the force field. Subplot: Angered by Diana's incompetence, Lydia steals a shuttle and attempts to reach the Leader. But she is shot down by Diana's orders. Guests: Jacob--John McLiam Episode 8: The Christmas Miracle December 21, 1984 Writer: Chris Manheim Director: Kevin Hooks Producer: Skip Ward Using Christmas holly, Diana obtains a blood sample of Elizabeth and clones an exact duplicate. The clone, however, escapes and begins terrorizing the city with her unbridled powers. Meanwhile, Donovan and Tyler are using an underground railroad to get children out. They use a church as a hideout and reunite with Ham's old buddy Chris. One of the children reminds Tyler of his little girl, and he finds her presence most difficult. Julie is finally discovered to be a Resistance member, and through an elaborate scheme Bates and his henchmen plot to blow up the Club Creole. Julie is forced to break out of Science Frontiers and hurries to her friends' aid. But she is too late; the Club is destroyed. However, her Resistance friends are all right. In fact, they were the ones who blew the building up! The clone finally meets the real Elizabeth, and the meeting is a bittersweet one: she sacrifices her life in order to save Elizabeth and Kyle. Reunited in the ashes of the Club Creole, the Resistance offers a Christmas toast to peace and eventual victory. Ham Tyler plays Santa Claus for the fugitive children, and the rebels rejoice in the holiday. Guests: Chris--Mickey Jones Child--Jenny Beck
