From: wendy mills Date: Thu Nov 15, 2001 6:49 pm Subject: Observing the Three Musketeers Mike was more than a little surprised by the sudden embrace and quick kiss on the cheek that Julie had given him, before they left Amanda to sleep and started off toward the kitchen to see how the three teens were progressing with the evening meal. Her lips had been velvety soft against his roughened cheek and the mere contact had sped his heart up. He had never realized before how much a brief contact, gesture or look from the woman you loved could make your heart sing almost as much as it did in a couple's more intimate moments. His and Julie's relationship from the beginning had been tumultuous from their first meeting, right on up to the day she had walked out of his arms and out of his life and boarded a plane to New York. Their time hadn't been their own from day one and they had had to take quiet moments alone whenever they could and though he treasured those memories, he was looking forward to getting the chance to know Julie as a friend as well as the woman he loved. Whether or not their relationship ever developed back into a more physical one, he didn't know, but he was finding out that it really didn't matter to him as long as he was able to be with Julie and spend time with her every day. He broke out of his reverie to Julie telling him that she was going to go find Jenna to give her the lists she had made and that she would meet him back in the common room. Mike told her okay and proceeded to the kitchen. It looked to him by the sober faces of the three teens that they were in the middle of a heavy discussion that he wasn't sure he should interrupt. Seeing how this might be a way for him to observe the interaction between his son, Josh Brooks and Rei Carson, Mike leaned his tall frame against the doorway of the kitchen and waited for them to notice him. He couldn't help wondering what it was they were discussing that could make all three of them look so grim and strained his ears to see if he could make out anything. "There's something else isn't there?" he heard Sean ask Rei. He watched as the young woman lowered her head so as not to answer Sean's question. He watched as Josh and Sean exchanged quick looks before Sean reached out and lifted the troubled girl's chin so that he could look into her eyes. "He's still looking for you isn't he?" He heard Sean ask. Rei nodded slowly. "I'm his remember?" Rei said laughing. Mike wondered who 'he was' that Rei was referring to, but didn't have time to think to hard on it as Josh began to pace furiously. From the reaction Josh was having to what Rei had said, Mike quickly assumed that the mysterious 'he' was a lizard. "I'll kill him myself!!" He yelled. "There's no way, no way at all Criti is getting anywhere near you!" Mike didn't like the knowing glance that passed between Sean and Rei. It told him that whoever this 'Criti'Yan' was, both new him full well and didn't doubt that he posed a serious threat. He heard Sean pleading with Rei to let them know if and when Criti'Yan made an appearance, but could tell that the plea fell on deaf ears. He found himself wondering if he had made a mistake in assuming that Rei was just the cold-blooded assassin the lizards had made her into. In the brief time he had known her he had seen for himself just how close the three teens were and he was beginning to get the suspicion that he had his son back because of her. The thought troubled him enough that he was about to turn around and leave when he saw Rei's eyes widen as she realized who was standing there. Both Sean and Josh turned to and Mike didn't like at all the look of suspicion that crossed over his son's face. "So you've taken to spying on us now, Dad?" Sean accused angrily. "What were you thinking we were going to do while we were cooking? Poison the food or something?" Mike was startled by Sean's attack and began to defend himself. "No I was.." Then he stopped. He had no reason to defend himself and even if he did, it gave Sean no right to speak to him the way he just had. "I suggest you rephrase how you speak to me young man! I'm not going to apologize for not wanting to intrude upon the conversation you, Josh and Rei were having!" Sean opened his mouth to respond to his father's order, but stopped as Rei reached out and laid a hand on his shoulder. He glanced over at her and saw that she and Josh both were frowning at him. It was clear to him that both seemed to think he had jumped the gun a little with his dad. Truth was, he did too. "I'm sorry," he told his Dad simply. "Apology accepted."Mike told him and sent a tentative smile in Rei's direction for her intervening. Rei offered a small smile back in turn. "Now what can I do to help with dinner. She was just as pleased with the fruits of their hard work as Tyler was but she couldn't stand the pent up tension of waiting and the additional worry over Galin currently missing in action. She rolled her shoulders and headed toward the basement. There was pleanty of amo and some target practice sounded pretty good. She arrived in time to see money change hands as Pheadon finished up a clip. A running bet on acuracy from what she gathered from the men's jibes and light laughter. She cleared her throat and caught their attention. "Well, well, Macleod...how about it?" Lathaniel asked her, offering her an Uzi with an outstretched hand. She looked at the gun and gave him a cold smile as she passed him by and withdrew a semi-automatic pistol from the table. She accepted from Daryian a pare of goggles and headphones so as to protect her ears then stepped into the vacant spot Pheadon offered her. She waited a few moments as he ran out and changed the target and then made his way back to stand beside her. She raised her arms and took aim, taking time to gain her line of sight and began to fire, not stopping until she had cleared the clip. She heard a chuckle from beside her and then caught Pheadon motion to Lathaniel. The other man frowned at her as he handed Pheadon a twenty-dollar bill. She had nailed her target, a straight line ran down the paper, then another line ran across the paper creating a neat + on the paper. She smiled at him and shrugged as she realesed the clip and slammed in a new one. She was half way through it when she felt the atmosphere suddenly change and she stopped and turned around catching sight of Julie Parrish watching her as she fired the gun. She could only describe the other girls look as almost stricken. "Julie? You ok?" Jenna asked her, taking off the headphones and handing them and the goggles back to Daryian with a quick nod of thanks. Julie added, "I hope it's not too much. Mike and I have some money. The kids need things and we kind of left New York in too big of a hurry to think about it." She convieniently left out the part about beign stalked by a mad lizard and her rapist. Glancing down at the list, Jenna followed Julie to a nearby card table and began to read the other woman's scribblings. Philodandron... Ficus... Forsythia. "My real name is Reianna Bates. When my father sent me away I became Reianna Carson. Kyle said it was better that way less questions." Rei explained. Rei leaned against the steel table. "Kyle sent me up to the state school in Ojai after the first invasion when Nathan became powerful. Kyle was afraid that Nathan would see me as bad press and try to get rid of me. Do you know how that feels Mr. Donovan? To know your own father would rather have you dead than let anyone know you exsist?" Rei said laughing. She looked around then lit a cigarette. "When the Sirrians came back Kyle tried to come and get me. I saw him his name on a prisoner manifest after I started my Youth Corps training. It was to late by then. I was one of Klaus's prize students." Rei said. She looked at Donovan carefully taking another drag of her cigarette. "You think I'm a monster fine, I did what I did and honestly I would do it again. Galin stood shifting from foot to foot, he had been waiting now twenty minutes or so since they had been notified that there had been some trouble with a small aircraft. He stood beside a line of chairs nearest to the gangway door. He caught a young woman watching him and smiled at her, she blushed and glanced away quickly. One of the things Jenna had always told him made her love him so was the fact that he wasn't selfaware, he was a handsome man, tall only slightly shy of six feet, light sandy brown hair which he wore long enough to touch his collar the way she liked it. His face was chiseled and when he smiled he could melt the heart of an ice queen, when he was upset, Jenna once told him she thought she could feel the storm clouds gathering. He always laughed at her and kissed her before she could go farther. He sighed and was grateful to hear them finally call his row to board the plane. He handed the stewardess the ticket and strode down the gangway. Once seated he closed his eyes a moment and listened as the other passengers settled in around him. He opened his eyes and reached over grabbing up his knapsack, he rummaged for a moment and finally finding what he wanted set the bag aside. He held a small brown leather notebook of Jenna's, one her mother had given her years before all the lizard stuff had happened. It was well worn and well loved. He had seen a black leather one very much like it and had bought it for her for Christmas. She had put her mothers into safe keeping in a drawer beside their bed and used his for her day to day activities. She still had it with her. This one she had left behind and he had found it sitting on top of a book she had been reading in the same drawer. He flipped it open to the address section. He remembered the day that she had accepted his and placed this one away. She had told him that the address listed would help him find her if the need ever arose. He had dismissed the thought, until now. He flipped the book open and realized at how few addresses he could find. Ham Tyler's was not hard to miss, it took up a whole page, several address, overseas as well as here in the states, as well as several phone numbers. He also found an address for a restaurant, this one in Los Angles called ''Tempura Tsunami', he found a name he recognized from some of Jenna's war story's, 'Phaedon Keitz'...this was listed across the page from the restaurant. One thing he did notice the name's where not in an order he could understand. They where not alphabetical. Ham Tyler's came first, then the restaurant, then this man Keitz. He continued flipping through, there where only a handful or so more. He shook his head flipping through several times. As they lifted off, he closed the book and leaned his head back certain there was reason behind the madness. But at the moment he couldn't see it. He closed his eyes and let sleep steal over him as the plan reached its cruising altitude. The pain had lessened in its intensity, but his wounds still needed attention. He had to be careful. One mistake, and all this work would be for nothing. In the back seat the body of the young man was positioned perfectly. Criti'Yan had situated the body to appear as if the man was hurt but alive. "If only a doctor would come this way," he remarked wryly. As if The Leader heard his wish, a lone man wearing scrubs and carrying a doctor's bag crossed the street and headed toward the parking lot. Criti'Yan sized him up immediately. 'He'll do,' he surmised and quickly exited the vehicle. The man approached but had not seen Criti'Yan yet. "Excuse me, doctor," Criti'Yan began, "my friend is hurt and doesn't like hospitals. Can you please help him?" The man turned his head at the sound of Criti'Yan's voice and walked briskly towards the car. "I'll do what I can. What happened to him?" 'Wait for it. Wait. Just a few more feet. There.' Criti'Yan grabbed the man's arm and covered his mouth with his other hand. "I killed him--that's what happened to him. And if you don't help me, I'll do the same to you. I'm hurt, and you are going to help me. Then I'll let you go. Do you understand?" Trembling, the doctor closed his eyes and nodded. "Good. Come with me. No funny business. It's just you and me in this parking lot." Criti'Yan opened the trunk and forced the man inside. He shut it with a smile. He really liked Earth and would be sad to leave the planet. And even over the commotion between Robin being greeted and Rei's outburst Julie could hear the faint cries of her own child. Wordlessly, she slipped away from the group and down the hallway. By the time she reached her bedroom, Maggie Blodgett was already there, stroking Amanda's back saying. "It's okay, shh. You're okay." Julie stood in the doorway, watching Maggie and cleared her throat saying, "Juan's here with Robin and her cousin." "Just like old times, huh?" Maggie looked up at Julie and got to her feet seeing that Amanda was contented with her own thumb. "I'm sorry. I wouldn't have rushed right end, but I know how noisy she can get. I wouldn't want Ham to be anymore upset with you." "I'm not worried about Ham," Julie said wistfully as Maggie came out in the hallway to join her. "But you haven't heard the latest. Some Visitor is after Robin." "Great," Maggie said dryly. "You're not kidding me. And Jenna wants me to go with her to play botanist." Maggie gave her a blank stare. "I need some plants for the new toxin trials," Julie explained. "I didn't realize you would be working on anything, with her I mean," Maggie motioned back to the room. "Well, I might as well do something." "Are you taking the baby with you on your trip?" "No, I don't think that would be a good idea. I'll have to get her father to look-" "I'll help," Maggie offered before Julie could finish. Julie forced an appreciative smile. "I had a feeling you would." As they neared the dining hall, Maggie took in a whiff of the Mexican aroma. "Juan brought us dinner?" she guessed. "No," Julie replied, entering the room. "The kids made chili." Just the mere thought of a spicy meal made Julie's stomach turn sour. But it didn't seem to offend the others who were also taking their places and helping themselves. "Mmmm," Maggie smiled taking a seat at the long table, then looked back at her friend who just stood there with a blank look on her face. "C'mon, before it gets cold." "No, I'm not hungry, really," Julie replied. "Besides, I have a few more things to add to that list." Ignoring the questioning look on Mike Donovan's face, Julie disappeared back into the hallway. Criti'Yan had told her about a spy who brought secrets to him about her and the rest of the Resistance members. Robin couldn't help wondering if this woman knew Criti'Yan. 'Is she the spy?' Soon, it would all be out in the open and they could take knowledge and do what they pleased. Robin knew Criti'Yan would come back. None of them would be safe. Sean, grabbed his crutches and lead the way out of the room. Josh held Rei tightly. Rei turned and looked briefly at Robin with mixed emotions. On one hand she was glad she had survived Criti'Yan's attack. Regardless of how much Rei despised her daughter, Rei knew how it felt to be victimized by Criti'Yan. On the other hand her survival had ensured Criti'Yan would be back to not only finish what he started but to collect his prize.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ ---------------------------------------------------------------- As Sean led the way out of the dining area and down the hallway toward the room he and Josh shared, he felt himself trembling inside at having reverted briefly back to his Youth Corps persona, in order to get Rei to listen to him. It had thoroughly shaken him and brought images of other times when he had issued her a command in order to calm her down over something that she had been forced to do. It isn't often that Rei fell into hysterics over anything anymore, but she had back then when they had first been appointed assassins. When they had each killed for the first time. Sean himself had been physically sick after his first time, both over what he had done and because he had enjoyed it a little. He knew now that the exhilaration that he had felt--the triumph over successfully defeating an enemy--had been induced by the high dosage of procob that he had been given. Though he knew that he wasn't entirely to blame for what he had done because of the Visitors constant control over him in the form of Siras, part of him was. If only he had been stronger, if he had been able to fight the affects of the procob better like Josh had, then maybe they wouldn't have chosen him. Hadn't chosen him to become the killer that he was. 'Hey Bro, where you going?" he heard Josh call out to him. Sean broke out of the reverie he was in and glanced around, realizing he had been so lost in his own private hell, that he had passed their doorway entirely. He turned around and immediately started back toward their room, where Josh and Rei waited in the doorway. He could see Josh eying him quizzically, but Rei had a look of understanding on her face. He saw in her eyes that she knew what it had cost him to revert back to his hated persona in order to snap her out of the bout of hysterics that she had went into. She offered him a wan smile as he reached them and all three went into the room and closed the door behind them. From: wendy mills Date: Wed Nov 21, 2001 2:15 am Subject: A silent Witness Mike had still been in the kitchen when Juan, Robin and under young woman had entered the common room. He had gone forward to greet them, remarking to Robin how much he had missed her while she had been gone. At Robin's introduction of her cousin Ulrika and announcement of a dangerous Visitor out for them, he had grown concerned. It hit to close to home to what he and Julie had experienced fighting off that lizard Siras in New York, and wondered briefly if they had been on in the same. Just as he had dismissed it as only being a coincidence, he heard what sounded like a symphony of symbols clanging together behind him and turned with everyone else to see what had been the cause of the noise. It was then that he saw a pale and shaking Rei Carson standing in the center of the kitchen, with a concerned Sean and Josh flanking her on either side. It appeared to him that the teenager was having trouble breathing, but thought differently a moment later, when she screamed at Josh to get away from her. He heard Sean order her to focus in an authoritative voice that he had never heard before and didn't like, but it seemed to do the trick at calming the girl down. Josh then announced for everyone else to go on with dinner and the trip of teenagers left the room. He turned his attention back to the others and saw Julie slip out of the room. Faintly he heard what sounded like Amanda crying and wondered if he should follow her. A few moments later she returned with Maggie, but only for a moment. A peculiar expression crossed over Julie's face as he watched and Mike couldn't help smiling at how adorable it was. His smile faded away a moment later when Julie slipped out of the room yet again. From: wendy mills Date: Wed Nov 21, 2001 2:51 am Subject: Dinner for two As everyone gathered around the table to eat, Mike took one look at the pot of chili sitting in its center and realized what had made Julie leave the room so quickly. Back during the first invasion, there had come a time when the Resistance had run out of nearly everything, especially food stuffs. Getting enough money to supply the ever-growing group with the basic necessities of toiletries, medical supplies and groceries was a constant struggle for the group so they had resorted to buying large quantities of canned items, anything that was on sale and would provide much needed nourishment for everyone. Other ways of getting food had been to steal out in the middle of the night and raid deserted stores nearby of whatever they could grab onto and on one particular night, he, Elias and Juan had struck what they had believed to be a gold mine of canned goods. Well they had quickly loaded up as much as they could of the stuff and carted it back to headquarters only to find out that every single one of the twelve cases contained chili. The entire group had lived off of nothing but chili and bread for about a week until all of them vowed to never eat another chili bean. Though the experience had been rather hard on all of them, it had been particularly hard on Julie. She had come down with a bad case of the flu two days after they had started living off of the chili and every time she caught a whiff of it cooking, she would race through headquarters to get to the bathroom in time to get sick. Even after she was well again, Julie hadn't been able to smell or see chili without becoming queasy. Obviously it was still affected her the same today as well. Knowing that she wouldn't come out until after the others were finished eating and the chili was all gone, Mike decided to make her a plate of salad and rolls and take it to her. The past few days, hell the year it seemed, had been particularly rough on her and she hadn't been eating much. Mike filled two plates generously with salad and rolls, grabbed a bottle each of Ranch and Italian salad dressing, silverware and two cokes, placed them on a large platter he found in one of the kitchen cabinets and headed to Julie's room. Julie was lying down on her bed, watching Amanda, who Maggie had rocked back to sleep, sleeping in her playpen. "Hi, I was wondering if I could join you for dinner?" Mike said as he walked into the room and set the platter down upon the table near the door. At the stricken look on Julie's face, he said quickly, "Don't worry I only brought us salad and rolls." Julie smiled appreciatively at Mike for his remembering her inability to eat chili. "Thanks Mike, but you don't have to stay in here. That salad won't fill you up." "I want to stay in here. I can always get some chili later. "Mike assured her. "Okay, then, " Julie replied doubtfully. From: "Tamie Kwist" Date: Wed Nov 21, 2001 9:51 am Subject: Dinner For Two ( continued) As Julie sat up in bed, Mike brought the plate to her, but she waved it away. "Uh, no, Mike. I'm fine." But Julie knew she wasn't fine. Her stomach was in knots as her mind raced with worries. He sat the plate down on a couple boxes that served as a makeshift nightstand. "You don't look fine," he noted. She stared at him long and hard, her eyes narrowing, realizing that whether he thought so or not, he was acting just like her mother. He recognized the look, one of a woman who needed some space, but didn't take the cue to leave her presence. "I thought maybe you were having chili from hell flashbacks." He found a place to sit on the floor. This brought a smile to Julie's face. "Oh, I forgot about that. No, I'm just not hungry. But you should probably eat while its still there. And find out whatever you can about that lizard." "Is that an order, Doc?" he teased. Julie nodded vigorously. "If he has connections to Rei than you can be sure he knows Siras as well. Now you might think I'm being selfish, but I don't want to risk either of them finding about Amanda. Have you thought about what getting her would mean to Diana?" "Sweetheart," he interrupted, "Don't you think you're taking this a bit far. Diana could be dead for all we know. I mean c'mon-" "I'm not taking any chances!" she whispered harshly. But in reality, Julie knew she was and regretted the fact that she would have to leave the little one behind for a couple days. "Mike, I need a favor from you." He glanced up at her. "You want me to stay in here with you and her tonight?" Actually, the thought hadn't occurred to her. And she started to giggle. "No, I'm sorry. That wasn't what I had in mind." "Hey," he said defensively. "You know I meant that sincerely." Again Julie laughed. "Yeah. Um, no actually, I need you to look after Amanda while I go away with Jenna for a couple of days. "But that's not the issue is it? This has nothing to do with you not trusting Sean or Josh as well." Rei said. "I notice Dr. Parrish you didn't eat any of the food we prepared. What is it?? Think I poisoned it???" She asked. She looked at Mike. "Or are you all afraid your going to wake up and find me standing over your bed with a knife in my hand." Rei said. She looked at Julie again. "Pretty reasonable right?? I mean that's what I did and I was good at it." Rei looked around the room she laughed bitterly. "I'll tell you what I'll do you a couple of favors For one, I'll leave the meeting. Two, I'll let you know right now guerilla warfare ain't going to work this time. The Sirians will be more prepared than ever. And last but not least if I was going to murder you, you would all be dead by now." Rei said coldly staring at everyone. She lit a cigarette and blew it the direction of Ham Tyler then stared back at Julie. Slowly she walked out the door. Without a word Sean followed her. Josh stayed behind for a moment watching everyone's reaction. "We know what you think of her. All of you expect for maybe Jenna. You don't know her and you don't know what she has been through not why she did what she did. Before you go judging her think about that." Josh said quietly. Jenna paused looking for the right word, "...well huge is even too small of a description for this." She looked around the room as she started in, "About two months ago the remaining resistance in New York and England got word through some of their operatives that they had discovered what they called "Black spots". Large buildings in several key places where there seemed to be sporadic flurries of activity at night. Not regular activity either...the buildings where supposed to be deserted. They sent some of their best men in to see what they could find out. They where wearing wires for communication and the base listened as they where ambushed...by visitors troops." She looked around the room. Only a few faces showed surprise. Tyler stood at that point and continued, a hard look on his face, "I was asked to take a team myself and see how far we could infiltrate one of those "black spots" here in downtown LA, this time the building was a hospital. Two of my associates..." He motioned to Daryian and Polly, "...accompanied me. We didn't get far before having to pull out, however we did intercept two men who had been taken prisoner after getting onto the grounds and snooping around. They told us little except that the security got even tighter as you moved forward into the building, suggesting that whatever was at the epicenter would be a huge revelation. We had already received word through some of the remaining fifth columnists that the visitors where planning a second attack. I had sent for some of my other people, who you've met already..." He motioned to Jenna and Pheadon. "...They came and set up headquarters here and stocked up on supplies. Some of the other cells both here in the us and over seas have started to do the same thing." He paused looking over at Jenna, who picked up his train of thought and started to speak again, "I accompanied Tyler back into the hospital with the others to see if we could gain access further. What we did get to glimpse is beyond unbelievable, the visitors have managed to recreate at least part of a mother ship underground. We couldn't get a count on how many of them stayed but we have reason to believe that they will be the first wave of the coming attack." He was still trying to come to terms with what Sean had said when Jenna had stepped forward and demanded that everyone shut up, sit down and listen. Barely had she finished her spiel, then Rei had stood up and gone off on Julie. Anger had flooded through him as he witnessed the fear and shock spring onto Julie's face, and had wanted to come to her defense, but thought if he did that Julie would only later jump on him for thinking she couldn't defend herself. After Rei, Sean and Josh had left the room, he had made a move to talk to her, but was stopped from speaking as Jenna once again took her plave before the group and started to tell him and the others about what it was that she and Tyler had found during the hospital raid. And The Orders Are ... Mable spent a very difficult evening with Tymko who, after his outburst, hid during supper in one of the smaller storage spaces watching the Sirians eat their raw fillets of vert. He refused to come out of hiding for the cooked vert fillets that Mable had prepared for him. He steadfastly ignored Mable's gentle coaxing from the dinner table. Since she was not going to miss a meal or be too inconvenienced by the child's mood she ignored his behaviour understanding that Tymko needed some time to himself while he sorted his world out and, when he was ready, he would appear at the table to eat a cold supper. Normally Tymko was a very happy and cheerful child whose playful and relaxed nature could always find something to tease and laugh about. Like the time when Tymko quickly explained to a high ranking member why he was listed as an inedible on the unit rolls. "I'm one of the keepers of the mammalian parasite collection. So if you don't want to find out if fish tapeworms can live inside you, then don't look at me so hungrily." Norman quietly cleaned up the table but left boy's meal sitting there. Then the adults left the room to attend to work-related matters in the office area, thus allowing the child to creep out of hiding and eat. They shared a conspiratorial look when they noticed him peeking around the corner of the room to eavesdrop. " There are some problems in moving the primary research kennels but it's the secondaries that are in danger of destruction," summed up Mable, as she studied the space allocation of the storage holds assigned to them on the Ramalon. "David is not going to like that, given his projects and studies...." Norman's voice trailed off. "Is there any way to get more space? How about the crew quarters?" "Those spaces are already taken. And asking the crew of the Ramalon. ... it's out of the question," answered Mable. "Why put temptations into their rooms where they will quickly become midnight snacks." "Some of the study participants are used to rooming with their assigned research animals"offered Norman who knew several friends and colleagues who were doing just that. "They would be willing to double-up to free up space to take their projects with them," Mable thought for a moment before slowly answering, "It is one of many options to explore. However, some of these cabins are very tiny and some of these research animals require as much space as you and me if not more. The aviaries need flight space as much as nesting boxes. And we just can't put Samuel's animals back into cryogenic hibernation. It would compromise the controls and the overall validity of several of his studies. No, that is not an option at this point. We'll only do that if we must." "So ... what we need is a larger ship," summed up Norman. "We are being sent as the advance party. There is only one ship ... So far...," grumbled Mable, who was finding it more and more likely that there will be favours owing to Philip, and hating the prospect. She found herself thinking, 'He would want something in return... and that's what worries me.' "The other possible option is to divide this unit and take those whose skills are needed as the advance party while accommodating whatever research projects they are a part of. Maybe the rest of the small mammals such as the rodents and the aviaries can go on the second ship appearing as part of the extra food rations. We only use many of the animals' nervous systems and brain matter for dissection purposes while the rest is wasted. I can see the logistic and the transport officers using that line of reasoning as to why can't the rest of the animal be eaten. " Norman looked at her horrified at the thought of eating the remains of a dissected rat or rabbit. "That's because they've never seen the preparation work of this. Maybe if we invite them for a discussion when one of the research teams is preparing the samples of tissue! That would change their minds in a hurry. A few more may even become closet herbivores." "Do make a note of that idea. It has a certain potential." Mable smirked as she said, "We may be reduced to doing just that.." "And does that mean the large mammals....what of them, the primate collection?" asked Norman, as he started through the manifest of personnel with a cross-reference to studies participation and the kennels, in anticipation of his commanding officer's request. He then mumbled, "This is going to take forever." "Just give me a primer of the who's and the what's and contact the head researchers for a status report of their studies. How many are close to completion of their studies or projects. That could reduce our manifest of animals within the kennels. We can always get replacement small animals on Earth." She paused before .... "It's getting close to my favourite time of the day.... tucking Tymko into bed and indulging in Earth literature. I can be found in the rabbit warrens. " Mable softly smiled at Norman as she left the room, leaving the young officer feeling somewhat jealous of the human child and yet puzzled why he should feel this way. He could hear snatches of the low conversation and the tone she used with the boy, gentle and reassuring. Slowly it dawned on him why he felt this way; it was something he craved as a child, the protective understanding of a powerful parental figure. His parents were from the working class and he had entered the Academy not by connections but by scholarship and the fact that the military was desperate for bright young officers for its many fleets. He was later assigned into the Youth Corps Educational Division, an area he accepted because he did not have the connections to get into one of the more elite areas. Maybe in time he would still pursue his dream to enter the legal division of the military. This was one of the many reasons he joined the Fifth Column, to make the connections to the future holders of power. Under the old ways of doing things, Norman would have spent the night with his commanding officer, no doubt within her bed. But within this unit, so many of the senior officers had other consorts, or reasons why they didn't behave like the rest of the members of the New Military, or the society of the leader's supporters, who regularly indulged in sexual activities as a means to achieve higher rank, and/or other favours. After spending a most difficult bedtime reassuring Tymko that his most basic fears of being eaten alive or even cooked would never become a reality, Mable finally settled into reading Watership Down until Tymko at last fell into an exhausted sleep. She then returned to the office where Norman was still busy at work, and was finally able to turn to the mission disks from Diana. The reading of the mission overview to the senior member of the advance party was something Mable expected from Supreme Commander Michael or from the Squadron Commander but not from Diana, a science officer with limited combat experience. Warning bells immediately sounded in Mable's mind. 'If what Diana has is considered combat experience then I should be one of the Supreme Commanders within one of our many fleets,' mused Mable cattily to herself. 'If I would have taken the Late Leader's flirting more seriously, I could be sitting as the senior science officer of the this fleet, but then I would never have respected myself in the morning nor him. Some avenues to success are best left unexplored.' A senior tactician gave the overall history of all the recent conflicts including where they now sat within the Earth truce. 'Philip should have given this portion. What the heck is going on? Michael cannot be thinking of invading Earth? What the hell is wrong with entering into commerce with the inhabitants.' She watched as the screen as more of the operational plans were given. 'Oh, so the justification is: We need. and ... They are in need of help to keep from falling into the hands of our Enemy. Their governments are in ruin due to us. We left here without attempting to undo the converted state of the various levels of government leaders. It is monkey politics! ....We should stay out until we have been invited back! Doesn't anyone wait for an invite these days?' The deep voice of the speaker, "Step One of the Plan: Find the following key individuals........" 'I'm supposed to go on the cruiser and find this massive list of individuals. Okay government leaders, military leaders, religious leaders, academic, business ..... Sounds sooooo like the first invasion.' "Youth corps members to be found and relocated to a safe zone of operations until ..." his words trailed off in Mable's mind. 'What am I suppose to do, find a deserted tropical island or keep them on Baffin Island? With the toxic bacteria that will be a no go! We would not even have the life expectancy of a fruitfly. So where am I supposed to store the little sociopaths that Diana allowed the late Klaus to create for us? No doubt his successor is just as twisted .... What is his name...Criti'Yan ... Wasn't there a another sibling who was also a senior Youth Corps leader on Earth during the first invasion? I'll have to check my records. ... I'm begining to feel my age! Retirement is becoming a viable option. Have to stay in this Unit for another few years until the young lad will be able to make his way within the two worlds of our peoples.' "There are many underground installations scattered around the planet. Motherships underground in a manner of terms. Each of these smaller mothership installations are fully equipped to the level of a Noth'Rath'ka class ship." droned on the speaker. 'A small but powerful class of mothership. But where in the heck did we get the personnel for this mission and how did we get them there?' She sat, staring at the screen. Hearing, but no longer comprehending the tactician's words. The thoughts circled in her head like a flight of doves too rattled to roost. Slowly they settled to ground, 'We never left Earth! The sudden departure was meant ... So we could tactically abandon virtual motherships complete with ground and support troops. The conflicting stories of the amount of missing personnel, those missing in action was a ruse. The official story was a lie Nor is this just a peace and security force being sent to protect this planet from possible attack. Nor is Michael counting on Earth becoming our ally. Rather he must believe that most humans would take the opportunity to put into action the homily of "My enemy's enemy is my friend and ally" He wants to insure Earth becomes loyal to the defense of our sector from the Others. But is he trying to protect it? Or is this part of manipulations by Diana to re-gain her control of the planet for herself?' Mable looked up to Norman saying, "Norman, I need a full list of names of every conversion therapist, specialist, and technician that ever walked through our training facilities who never returned with the fleet. What is their status: MIA or KIA? Which ship and what area was their last posting? Sub divide this group into those who were from this this Unit and those who were serving within security, or science and technology. I want a list of names of these individuals and other facts of note. Or interesting trivia! And I ...WANT ... this ...ASAP!" Norman looked puzzled at why she suddenly needed or wanted this information. He silently groaned to himself thinking, 'Why always on my turn at DO?' But he cheerfully spat out, "Yes ma'am!" To his surprise she didn't lay into Jenna about misinterpreting their relationship, nor the condescending tone in which she had referred to her. Instead she had turned to Tyler and made her request of some live Visitor specimens and a refrigerating storage area for her lab. It had taken him only a minute to realize that she had handled Jenna's situation accurately. There was no need for either of them to defend their relationship, what it was, to anyone. Acting defensive to the comment, would have only added more speculation on everyone else's part of just what kind of a relationship that they had going. Sometimes his mouth got him into more trouble than what was really necessary and he was prepared to accept his lashing from Jenna this time. It wasn't that he thought she was right in saying what she had, but if they were going to be prepared for the lizards arrival, then he could let slide any petty indifferences slide for now. It was more important that they all learn to work as a team. It was the only chance they had at beating the lizards once and for all. Mike's inner musings were interrupted by the sound of Robin's voice announcing that there was a Visitor after her. Mike closed his eyes in an exasperated sigh, thinking to himself (Won't she ever learn?). Then he chased the unkind thought aside. Robin was just as much the victim of her own circumstances, as Sean was to his and if grudgingly he admitted to himself...so was Rei. All of them had been deceived by the Visitors in some way or another, but Robin most of all. At Robin's mention of the lizard's name, Mike's ears perked up. That was the same name he had heard Rei and Josh and Sean talking about earlier that evening. He wondered if he had mistaken the name or if there could be two lizards with the same one? Many humans were given the same name at birth, so wasn't it a possibility that the lizards did it to. "Suppose you start at the beginning Robin? She was reluctant to tell them everything but knew she had to. "We had lunch and he said he was also on his way to L.A. For a while, it was wonderful." "Criti'Yan sold the truck, and we headed for the ranch. I was going to let him stay with me until he got back onto his feet out here." Robin paused, "At the ranch, he said he had to run an errand and left. It was then that I discovered Ulrika was staying there too. She warned me about this guy in Sweden asking questions about me-- Pierre. I laughed at her and didn't believe a word. He returned later that night and encountered Ulrika. There was a confrontation. He threw her against the wall and sprayed venom on her." "Then I came in and found out he was a Visitor. I had the gun you gave me, Ham, and I used it but not good enough. We learned he was Brian's brother and that he wanted revenge on me and on those involved in his brother's capture and murder," she stopped. His skin was tough, yes, but he had also consumed some beverages that the mysterious Muggo had left behind. Alcohol may have dulled Criti'Yan's pain, but it did not lull his senses. His body and mind were alert. This was something Ken was well aware of. He would be stupid to attempt a dangerous escape. The result would surely be his untimely demise. A short while after he began, Ken announced wearily, "That's it. I'm done." He stepped back and examined the patient. The Visitor's face was slowly returning to its natural color. The doctor knew he would be fine. "May I ask you something, out of curiosity?" "Shoot," the Visitor mumbled. "Well," Ken began, "it appears as if you have had some kind of medical training. If you save lives, why would you want to kill?" Criti'Yan laughed then sobered. "I'm not a doctor. I'm a trained killer. When I was younger, I assisted the wounded on my planet. The only life I care about is Sirian. Not human. It would be wise to keep that in mind." Ken gulped and stared at the floor. "You said you'd let me go if I did what you asked." From: "Tamie Kwist" Subject: (story) Catch Me When I Fall As the meeting came to a close, Julie didn't stick around and wait for anybody. Within minutes, she found the office with the phone and dialed Hannah's number first. Julie wasn't completely nuts. She knew it was past their bedtime. In fact it was going on eleven. But this call couldn't wait. It rang and rang and rang. She hung up on the eight, remembering Pete Forsythe's number. Surprisingly, it was picked up after the fourth ring. Instead of a voice, right away Julie heard a loud TV blaring in the background... "Good evening, this is Deniese Daltrey with channel five news at eleven..." "Pete, can you turn that down?" Lauren Stewart had asked before she addressed Julie. "Hello?" "In a minute," Julie heard Pete utter. Annoyed, she could still hear the TV as Deniese spoke, "More on the Manhattan Rapist..." "Hi," Julie gasped only guessing at what Deniese was talking about, her 'rapist'. "Julie?" Lauren said excitedly. "We thought you would've called earlier. Did the flight go okay?" But Julie's attention was still on the broadcast... "Two women, 53 year old Constance Parrish, and 21 year old Gabrielle Parrish where assaulted and killed by 59 year old Emory Burns-" Suddenly, the background noise was gone and Pete Forsythe could be heard. "Hey Lauren, give me back the clicker." "Julie, are you okay?" Lauren asked. Julie was speechless. Her eyes clouded over with tears and she sank to the floor and began to sob uncontrollably. She left the phone dangling off of Ham's desk. Julie sat there for a good twenty minutes, alone in her agony. She didn't dare hang the phone up should Lauren try to contact her in return. For that matter she wasn't sure if they even had the number. No matter, she didn't want to talk to anybody. But her wish went ungranted as Maggie Blodgett found her. "Julie?" Maggie squatted down gathering Julie's frail frame into her arms. But Julie was unresponsive, her eyes were focused, as Maggie pushed her back to look at her she saw that she blinked less than what seemed normal. "What is it?" Maggie demanded. Her question got Julie to glance away as if the eye contact was too much, too painful. "Do you want Mike?" Maggie asked, unsure if she could console Julie herself. "No," Julie pouted breathlessly. "I.... Leave me alone... p-plea- se." But Maggie didn't leave her. "Hon, I really don't think thats a good idea. Did somebody scare you?" Julie felt her eyes flood with tears once again as she shook her head. "What then?" Maggie persisted. Julie gathered what little strength she had left to reveal the painful truth. But her voice barely rose above a whisper. "M-my m-mmm- mother," she paused for a beat, feeling her pulse pounding away its relentless rythym, "an-and, Gabby, w-were k-killed." Maggie could nearly feel her pain, or only begin to imagine the horror she was going through. Her own eyes swelled with tears as she asked, "Siras?" Julie shook her head violently back and forth, closing her eyes. "I g-guess its over. Th-they found the man who hurt me. H-he k-killed them." Maggie gathered her into her arms once again and held her tightly. They stayed that way for a few minutes until Julie mumbled. "Don't say anything to Mike, please." From: wendy mills Subject: Aching To Offer Julie Any Comfort That He Could Mike had kept a steady gaze upon Julie's face as Robin had reluctantly told them all a more detailed story about her meetiing with the lizard called Crit'yan. He hadn't liked how even more pale and withdrawn she was becoming as she listened to the talk around her. When she abruptly asked if there was a telephone she could use, he all but asked her who she was going to call, but he hadn't wanted to pry. He had a feeling he knew already who she was going to call. He felt sorry for Pete and Lauren both for the tongue-lashing that she was going to give them for keeping her in the dark about something so important as the lizards reinvasion. He couldn't blame her for being mad, but he couldn't really blame Pete or Lauren for not wanting to heap any more worries or stress upon Julie's shoulders than what she already had. When she was gone for more than twenty minutes, Mike decided that it couldn't hurt to check and she if she was okay and crossed to the hallway she had disappeared down a short time earlier and started down it. He hadn't far down the hallway before the sound of a woman sobbing reached his ears, along with the sound of muffled talking. He reached the doorway of the office and came upon a sight that stopped him dead in his tracks. Julie sat in the center of the floor, with her arms curled over her knees, rocking back and forth. Maggie was kneeling on the floor beside her, trying to get Julie to tell her what was wrong. He heard Maggie ask Julie if she wanted her to get him and Julie's hesitant and barely audible response. Mike wandered if he should make his presence known or just leave and let Maggie help Julie through whatever it was she was going through. Ultmately leaving proved to be much harder a decision to carry through than he thought it was. His eyes were riveted on the shaking figure of the woman he loved and his heart ached to do something to ease her pain. It was during this brief indecision of his that Julie told Maggie about her mom and Gabrielle being murdered by the man who had raped her. Anger swept through him in a blinding rush as he thought of the man..the animal who had not only violated the woman he loved and stolen from her a year of her life and possibly more, taking something even more precious to her from him. He curtailed his rage and instead focused in on helping Julie, stepping forward and kneeling down beside Maggie as Julie pleaded with her not to tell him. "Too late sweetheart." he told her softly. From: wendy mills Subject: A Clever Excuse Sean had felt he had done a good job, keeping his own inner turmoil over Criti'Yan and the things he had one under the lizard's tutelage, as he listened to the argument going on between Rei and Josh. He was as much to blame as Rei was for the Resitance members and other enemies that they had killed. Saddest thing was that deep down inside, he knew he had enjoyed it. He had thrived on hunt for a new victim to capture or take out, had been thrilled when their intended prey played hard to get and he gave chase, loved the exhilaration he had felt as he tookout a blade and slit their throats. He gulped hard to chase the memory away and responded with a weak, "That's right," to Josh's telling Rei that they were the Three Musketeers and if the other Resistance members didn't accept her, they didn't accept them as well.He felt Rei and Josh both look over at him strangely, but it was Rei who asked, "You o.k. Donovan?" He shrugged the question off and lied, not wanting Rei to worry even more about him than he knew she already did. "Just tired." Rei nodded. "Let's get you to you bed." She said lovingly. Sean smiled as Rei and Josh lifted him up into their arms and they started out the door toward his and Josh's room. "Promise you will be here when I wake up??" He asked. Rei smiled. "I promise." Sean smiled back at her in return, relieved that she had promised him. Rei never made a promise to him or Josh that she didn't keep. He found himself relaxing slightly in their arms as they walked down the hallway toward his and Josh's room. He really was weary and his leg had begun to throb again from all the moving around he had done. He would have to ask Josh to get him a glass of water in which to take his medicine. Hopefully the pain reliever would knock him out so much that he wouldn't dream tonight. Truthfully, Maggie didn't know how long it took to warm a bottle up on the stove. It had been so long since she'd even been near a baby let alone had to feed one. She pulled the bottle out of the water and returned the bottle to the water four times before being satisfied with the feeling of the milk she sprinkled on her wrist. But by that time, Amanda had stopped crying. So Maggie headed towards the room and saw Robin heading down the hallway. Bottle in hand, Maggie entered the room, only to find that the baby was fast asleep. "Teaser," Maggie hissed, heading back to the kitchen, and took the pan off the stove. Then she returned to tell Julie that the baby was sleeping again. But Julie was gone and so was Mike. Julie found her way back to the medical lab that Jenna showed her earlier with Mike not far behind, watching her open and shut cabnit doors. "Taking inventory?" he guessed. "Julie, why don't you rest?" She nodded vigorously. The tears were still flowing from her eyes. "Great idea. But I doubt if I can. Besides, I have to get ready for tomorrow," she whined. Not after the news that she had just been given about her mom and Gabrielle. He hadn't liked the idea about her going somewhere alone with Jenna in the first place. The woman was a younger, carbon copy of Tyler and though he knew she was good at what she did, she wasn't too willing to listen to anyone else's ideas other than her own. And there was no telling what kind of trouble she could get both her and Julie into with that temper of hers, if people didn't do as she told them to fast enough. He didn't voice his concerns though, sensing that Julie needed some time away from everything...and more than before she needed something to focus her attention on in order to keep herself together. He also knew that as mild-mannered as Juliet was on most days, she too was a woman who was used to getting things done as well. Her manner of doing business wasn't cold and calculated like Jenna's was, but calm, thoughtout and determined. If ever there was a time that Julie needed to reassume her Resistance persona it was now, when she still had time to work out the kinks of a year's unuse. "You bet," he agreed, going over to hug her. This time she didn't flinch, but didn't accept it with much enthusiasm either. "So long as you do me a favor and try to get some rest for tomorrow," he said softly in her ear. She looked away from him. "I'll see you in the morning," he said, heading to the hallway. Julie just stood there for a few minutes, getting angry with herself and pouting. He and Rei carried Sean over to his cot and none to gently dropped him on top of it. Sean out a loud, "Whew! That wasn't funny!" "We thought it was." Rei told him and immediately started laughing. Josh joined in after only a few seconds and the room was filled with laughter for several minutes until they gained control of themselves. Sean glared at his two best friends as they left, thinking up all kinds of devilish ideas in which to pay them back. Their laughter was contagious though and soon Sean joined in. "What's so funny in here?" a voice called out from the doorway. All three teens sobered instantly at the question Mike Donovan posed to them. Rei grew silent and moved away from Sean's bed as Mike stepped forward with a glass in one hand and a bottle of medication in the other. "These two characters decided that they didn't like my asking them to be gentle in putting me on my bed and decided to hang me almost entirely upside down while I was trapped in their arms." Sean explained. He hated to see Rei become so withdrawn whenever his father walked into the room. He loved them both and he wanted them to get along. Mike smiled at the image of Sean hanging upside down. "Sounds to me like they thought you deserved it a little. Here I brought you your next dosage of pain medication. I figured you would be in alot of pain by now." "I am." Sean admitted as he took the glass of water from his dad. Mike opened the bottle and dropped two tiny capsules onto Sean's open palm. He waited until Sean had swalloed the medication and downed the water, then took the glass from Sean and stood up. "It's been a long day. I'm gonna turn in. If you need me for anything, send Josh to get me." Mike told Sean as he hugged him. "Will do. Night Dad." Sean replied. "Night son. " Mike said as he walked to the door. he turned around to gaze first at Josh, then Rei and back to Josh. "You two don't keep him up too much longer, he needs some sleep." "We won't Mike." Josh told him. "Night Josh, Rei." Mike said and disappeared out of sight. Rei had felt tears sting her eyes at the quietly spoken words that Sean's dad had said. Shecouldn't help tensing up each time he stepped into the room, because she didn't know what to expect from him. It was clear to her how much he really loved Sean, making her discount the idea that she and San were in the same boat. That they were sent away from home to the school in Ojai by people who claimed to love them, but didn't want to be bothered with them. She was starting to realize that Mike hadn't sent Sean away to get him out of his hair, but becuase he had truly believed the school could help Sean most in recovering from the effects of the conversion he had undergone. "You okay Rei?" Sean asked. "I'm fine." she told him reassuredly and came to stand beside his bed. "Why don't you try and get some sleep? I'm kind of beat myself and think I'm going to go turn in." Sean nodded. "Remember you're promise?" "I haven't forgotten." Rei bent down and gave him a tight hug and then hugged Josh as well. Josh walked her out of the room and into the hallway. Seeing the unspoken words in Rei's eyes Josh said, " I'll come get you if he needs you." Rei nodded and started to move down the hall. Josh grasped hold of her hand and pulled her gently back into his arms. He held her close against him for a few minutes before she broke away and took off down the hallway. Josh returned to the room, where he slipped out of his pants and turned off the light. Sean's eyes were already closed when he went to click the overhead light off and Josh couldn't help hoping that Sean would have a dream-free night...... ****Sean opened his eyes to the darkness that surrounded him and listened intently to the sounds around him. There a crinkle of paper in the near distance. He moved steathily across the underpass toward the sound that had alerted him to the direction of his prey. His heart beat a steady staccato in his chest as exhilaration filled him at the thought of his long hunt being almost over and the kill so close. He was but a few feet away from his intended victim, when a new sound reached his ears behind him. Instinctively he turned with a loud cry and snatched the long pipe that was a bearing down upon his head at rapid speed from within his attacker's outstretched hand. He saw his attacker's eyes widen in alarm and smelled the woman's fear as the tables were turned against her. He smiled gleefully at the woman, only seconds before he bashed her head in with the metal pipe she had intended to kill him with.**** Sean tossed restlessly back and forth on his cot in Resistance Headquarters as he dreamed, unconsciously disturbed by the images his mind was tormenting him with... ***Sean heard the outraged scream of another human as he stood over the body of the woman he had just killed. An anguished cry beside where he stood drew his attention over to a section of the underpass where the wall of it met with the foundation and found a little girl of about five staring up at him with large, frightened eyes. "Don't be afraid.I won't hurt you," he murmured to the little girl and moved on knowing instinctively that Criti'Yan would be displeased with him. He moved on, knowing from the reports that he and Rei had done that this small Resistance sect had about ten members altogether. "Sean!" The anguished scream of his friend echoed through the underpass and filled him with anger and distress. Sean whirled away from the child and dashed off into the direction the cry had come from. He arrived on the scene in time to see Rei fall from a knfe wound in her side and several men standing over her. In one of the men's hands, he saw a huge bowie knife dripping in Rei's blood. Rage flooded through him as he charged the man with the knife and without much of a fight, disarmed and killed him only to besieged upon by the other men. Sean fought them off, protectvely standing over the still form of Rei**** Josh awoke with a start to the sound of Sean letting out a bloody cry and leaping up onto his cot. "Sean, what's wrong? Sean?" Josh cried out as he climbed out of his cot and started toward Sean's cot. He was but a foot away when Sean's leg swung out at him and he felt himself go flying backwards. He hit the wall and lay stunned for about a second, before scrambling back onto his feet. Instinctively he realized that Sean was dream walking again and that in his unconscious state had reverted to his assassin persona. Which meant Sean was potentially dangerous to anyone who dared to encounter him. Josh carefully moved toward the door of their room, passing ever so slowly by the cot Sean was on, not wanting to making any sudden moves that would have his friend on the defensive. He could feel Sean's gaze upon him, but didn't stop moving. As soon as he had reached the door he broke out into an all out run in the direction of the women's dorms. Rei was the only one who could bring Sean out of his dream. From: "Tamie Kwist" Subject: (Story) Girl Talk Returning to her room and to the unhappy cries of her daughter, Julie dreaded a long night ahead. She wished she had thought to ask Mike to care for Amanda tonight. Julie lifted the crying child out of the playpen and held her close. "What's the matter? Have I been ignoring you again," she said softly. Amanda's discontent grew stronger into a shrill angry cry. And Julie recognized that cry as one of hunger. "Didn't you eat for Maggie?" 'Look at me, I'm talking to a baby who has no clue.' The little one got louder and angrier with each passing second. Julie carried her to the kitchen muttering, "Maybe not." "She went back to sleep," said Maggie from her positon at the table. "How are you feeling, Julie?" "Okay," Julie lied. "And you?" Maggie rested her chin in her hands and stared straight ahead as she murmured, "This feels strange. Everything's all wrong, you know." The younger woman nodded, single handedly opening the fridge door and pulling out a fresh bottle. "I don't think I like the arrangements either," Maggie added lowering her voice. "What arrangements?" Julie said almost grateful to take her mind off of her own problems for a second or two. "I dunno. It seems like Ham has more control over things. There may not be an equal balance between him and Mike and that scares me. I mean personally, I'd rather work under someone who has a heart. And Mike's well... obviously got a lot on his mind right now, and you do too. I mean no disrespect, I understand and all. I just wish..." "-Things were more like the past," Julie finished her sentence taking a seat. "We don't even have any insiders that I know of. I wonder what Willie's doing right about now." With the mention of his name Maggie started to giggle. "Commotioning up some new drink for his friends." Maggie had used the word commotioning instead of concocting because it was something that Willie would have done. Julie started to laugh too, as she propped the bottle up more for her impatient daughter. "I could use a drink right about now too." Suddenly her laughter stoppped and was replaced by silent tears. Maggie looked up at her. "You'll get through. You just need to learn to depend on other people again. You haven't done that in a long time." "I don't want to," Julie said a little too defensively. "War puts a strain on everyone. I don't want anyone thinking they have to look out for me. I shouldn't even be here." Picking up her half empty coffee cup and dumping it in the porcelain sink, Maggie sensed that Julie was in some sort of denial. "I can't think of anyplace more exciting," said Maggie dreamily. "Oh, please!" Julie scowled. "I just want to find some deserted island where I know Amanda and I will be safe. Enough with this fear crap!" Hearing the words tumble out of Julie's mouth like a woman who was fed up with life, Maggie was startled, by the anger. She always knew that Julie was hurting this past year, but she hadn't really seen the anger come out of it. Julie closed her eyes, feeling ashamed for her outburst. "You know, Julie," Maggie said thoughtfully. "Being in this place is a different way... of living in fear. You don't have to let it consume you. We're all here to fight back so we don't have to be afraid. And Mike-" "No!" Julie cut her off as if she couldn't stand the thought of what she knew Maggie was about to say. "He already has enough responsibility." She paused for a few seconds as if deep in thought then came up with a suggestion. "Maggie, maybe you can talk to him for me while I'm gone. Tell him to back off. I mean I know he says he'll do whatever I want. And the only thing I want is for him not to care so much. But I can't bring myself to tell him, and besides, he probably wouldn't believe me if I told him." Maggie suddenly became annoyed with her. "Don't you see what you've done for the past year? You've isolated yourself and pushed everyone away who's tried to help you, Julie. For that matter, what makes him so special that you can't tell him to back off yourself? Why can't you do it?!" Julie didn't answer. Angrily, she got up taking Amanda with her and headed back to her dorm. From: "Jaime" Subject: (story) Breaking Out--Part 2 Nigel and Elizabeth walked briskly but not so fast as to attract unwanted attention. Most did not notice the two Visitors, and that was good. They were preparing for the invasion of Earth and had no time to concern themselves with a captain and a mystery woman. For that, Nigel and Elizabeth were both grateful. Soon, however, the guards would learn of his deception and return to their posts outside Elizabeth's chamber. 'The fools probably won't even check to see if she's in there. Maybe they'll think I'm berating someone for tricking me,' Nigel speculated. Visitor guards were not known for their keen intelligence, after all. Elizabeth was overjoyed. 'Finally, a taste of freedom!' It had been such a long time. 'Will probably be longer if Diana hears about this,' she guessed. But Diana would get her wish, that should be enough. Elizabeth would consent to the medical experiments in return for spending time with Kyle. 'He's worth everything.' The two entered the recreation area, and Elizabeth was delighted by the scene.
