Pre-Learning Chat

The biggest battles ever fought are against one’s own self-perceived limitations. And the biggest joy is of self-discovery and realisation.

Copy down material
It would be best advisable to copy down all the material available in the note pad to save space, also to copy the video samples and pictures first, and then to study it at leisure. The video samples are designed to be of 1.2 Mb so that it can conveniently fit on a standard floppy. Later the essential part of the copied material can be retained and the rest deleted.

Every Person is different
Since every person is different various patterns are explained to suit the majority, so it becomes a bit exhaustive. Also a simple move involves complicated body movements. And these cannot be explained in short notes. Thus every effort to cater to the majority, has a bit that is required in the overall single movement in a dance.

For Everybody
When performing the exercises one should consciously bear in mind that all movements are part of our natural body movements. Thus all movements practiced should be without any pain, or exertion. In case some discomfort is felt, one should try to relax when doing the pattern of movement; if the discomfort is persistent then stop, and analyze the movement.

For example many can bend and touch their toes, yet there are a few who cannot. In such cases it is really not necessary to stretch to such a limit. What is essential is to bend just enough such that there is no pain or injury.

Tooth Ache.
Some times it happens that the front teeth, the incisors, pain. However the pain is felt at the teeth way behind, the molars, and the head pains, the ear pains and many more. Similar is the case with the twist exercise. Many a times the pain is felt in the solar plexus region, or at the front periphery of the diaphragm. However, probably after getting use to this pattern the pain is sometimes felt else where, at the back of either or both the shoulders. It is necessary to stop to analyze the movement. A body need some time to acclimatize to new movements.

Never Practice Alone
As far as possible never practice alone. When you read something the meaning becomes clear. However when someone else reads the same thing the meaning is slightly not the same. This is the communication gap. It is best reduced when practiced with a group. Since here the various patterns of interpretations become available and thus the right course also becomes evident. Also we learn to make better adjustments to stay in a group, and this helps in understanding ones self and in the company of others, and this in turn helps in developing a better team spirit; which is very essential in the Dance-Sport.

Instructions from a Teacher
There is no alternative to learning under the personal attention/guidance of a professional teacher.

When you study on ones own you get an idea. Since it is not very clear or you are not confident you would definitely take help from a friend. This gives you the second idea for the same thing. Next is when you approach a teacher and take the professional help. Here you get the third idea for the same thing. Here there would be a serious analysis, and here is where you get the fourth idea. And some time later, with experience you get the fifth idea for the same thing. So when there is a requirement, for example an examination, and lets assume you are likely to forget, but still the chances of forgetting all the five ideas/alternatives to a particular movement is rare. You would remember at least one that will carry you through successfully.

This is nothing new to us. We do so for the academics, or at least we aim for it. We study in advance, and finish a few revisions before the examinations. This exact procedure is also required when learning to dance.

Attitude to continuously improve
This is very necessary to be a good dancer. One need to continuously be very conscious to learning new things, re-evaluating ones movements, and continuously keeping an eye open for improvements.

So when one goes for a dance it should be for learning and enjoying simultaneously.

Good Dancer
To excel in dancing means to excel in all the fields necessary for the survival. If for example, dancing is the prime ambition, then it is like a block at the top of a pyramid. However the pyramid needs equally strong building blocks below it; and as the height increases the number of blocks increase. The other blocks can be compared with the knowledge of current affairs, finances, interaction with others, sciences, history, schedules, self control, behavioral patterns, discipline and etc.

Another part of dancing is like a pyramid. One starts at the top. It's just a point, little basic moves and one is dancing. However the serious side is that as we delve deeper down the pyramid, the base simply increases; and the best part is that there is no bottom, it's an abyss.

Getting all this really requires hard work and experience. This is why we would discover any where in the world, many more elderly people as compared to young ones, whose dances, seems to be very pleasing.
