The Basic Movement

Ballroom dancing is not steps; instead it's body movement.
Always bear in mind the body movement occurring as a result of which the feet fall into places as indicated by the "steps".
Man & Lady
When man is doing the forward half the lady is doing the backward half and vice versa.
Forward Half (Start and end in closed facing position)
1 Left foot forward Right heel is released from the floor 2
2 Replace weight on Right foot Left heel is released from the floor 3
3 Left foot to the side and slightly backward   Cha
4 Right foot closes in with the Left foot (feet together) Cha
5 Left foot to the side (small step as compared to Sr. No. 3) 1
Backward Half (Start and end in closed facing position)
1 Right foot backward Left heel is released from the floor 2
2 Replace weight on Left foot Right heel is released from the floor 3
3 Right foot to the side and slightly forward   Cha
4 Left foot closes in with the Right foot (feet together) Cha
5 Right foot to the side (small step as compared to Sr. No. 3) 1
In Pairs
Start and end in closed facing position.

A turn of 45 degrees or 1/8 to 90 degrees or 1/4 turn to the Left can be made over the five steps of either or both the forward half and the backward half of the basic movement.

Hint: If the turn is small then swivel after stepping for ‘3’ and when in the motion to move for the first ‘Cha’ is convenient. Or else, swivel after stepping for ‘2’ as well. Turning when doing the Chasse will give a larger turn.

A slight crossing action may be made on "&" of the chasse. When moving forward the toe of the back foot is behind the heel of the front foot. When moving backward the heel of the front foot is ahead of the back foot toe. The toe is always outward-turned. The footwork is ball-flat, ball and ball-flat.
