Foxtrot, Quickstep and Tango: Basic Step

Movement in the Ballroom dances is as walking on the clouds.

Here the counts are form 1 to 6, however only four steps are done. This is achieved by pausing on a foot for the counts 2 and 4. Thus if one starts on the left foot for the count of 1, then pause on this foot for the second count 2. Next transfer the body weight onto the other foot for the count of 3, and pause on this foot for the count of 4. Thus the counts 1 and 2 come on one foot and the counts 3 and 4 come on the other foot.

Thus if one starts with the left foot then the counts 1,2, and 5 always will come on the left foot and the counts 3,4 and 6 come on the right foot.

1. Start mark-time on the spot using the counts given above.
2. Once the counts have set in, then start to move about randomly without sacrificing the rhythm and the continuous transfer of body weight alternately from one foot to the other.

Through out the exercise one should be performing the mark time by consciously flexing the knee and weight should be only on one foot without the break in rhythm of counts.

Similarly start the exercise on the other foot.

The rhythm of Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick could be used in place of (1, 2) (3, 4) (5) (6). Thus the Slow takes two counts 1, 2. The second Slow takes the count 3, 4. The first Quick takes the count 5, and the second Quick takes the count 6.
