This is a bibliography for historical studies on earth sciences from the Antiquity to the time of G. W. Leibnizs Protogaea (most probably written around 1691). Apart from well-developed studies on Georg Agricola (1494-1555) and Nicholas Steno (1638-1686), the history of occidental geocosmic thought (in Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque period) until the end of the seventeenth century is, even today, a field that is relatively unexploited by historians. The following bibliography has been compiled to assist those who intend to start a study of these areas. It does not pretend to be exhaustive (especially for Agricola and Steno), but contains important materials in English, German, French and Italian that are readily available in standard university libraries in Europe and elsewhere.
