General Remarks: Torpedo performance very poor. All torpedoes fired at under 1000 yds. Because of the dismal torpedo performance it was necessary to use this boat as a surface vessel to get any results from this patrol. Torpedo performance as follows: Hits - 10, Duds - 14, No misses or prematures. Rmks 1 - Departed Pearl Harbor 4 Nov 1942 for the Marianas. Sector NM-1 with 24 MK 14 torpedoes, SJa, SD. Rmks 2 - Arrived NM-1 5 Nov 1500. Commenced patrol pattern to the NE. Rmks 3 - 6 Nov - 0110 - SJ contact. Intercepting. 1 maru and 2 escorts. 0148 - Fired 1 at tanker - Hit and sunk. Evading escorts. 0422 - Escorts gone. Many depth charges. No damage. Resumed patrol pattern. 1457 - High periscope search - Visual - Range 20000 yds. No SJ contact. 4 marus in line ahead, hull down. 1501 - SJ contact at last. Range 14500 yds. Bearing 324 deg. To periscope depth. Intercepting. 1515 - Sonar contact - 5300 yds. 1520 - Visual ID - 1 tanker, 1 AMC, 1 supply ship, 1 large freighter inbound for Saipan. No escorts. 1523 - Fired #1 at tanker - Dud Fired 7 at supply ship - Dud Fireed 2 at tanker - Hit and sunk Fired 8 at supply ship - Dud Fired 9 at supply ship - Dud Fired 10 at supply ship - Hit and sunk Fired 3 at AMC -Hit Fired 4 at AMC - Dud Fired 5 at AMC - Hit and on fire Fired 6 at AMC - Hit and sunk. 1528 - Torpedo reload underway - Tracking large freighter Fired #1 - Dud Opening range for deck gun action - DAMN THESE TORPEDOES. 1551 - Freighter at 3500 yds - Surfaced - Manned deck gun. 1557 - Commenced firring at 2700 yds - At 2500 yds freighter returned fire. Opened range to 2700 yds. Grouper initiated radical course changes after each round was fired and he cant get our range, all his rounds missed. 15 Grouper rounds and he's on fire. 14 more hits and sunk. Convoy wiped out. Resumed patrol in a NW direction. 1912 - SJ contact - 13500 yds. Bearing 339 deg. Intercepting. 1932 - Visual - 3500 yds - No ID, too dark. 1940 - 4 columns, at least 10 marus. Matched their heading. Bearing 180 deg. Tracking. 2001 - No escorts. Reversed course for surface torpedo attack. 2008 - Fired #1 at Standard Merchant - Dud Fired 2 at SM - Dud Convoy scattering. Fired 7 at SM - Dud Fired 8 at SM - Dud Fired 9 at SM - Hit and on fire Hit by maru deck gun fire. Damage - Motor Room Pressure Hull - Heavy leaking - 2 hour repair Forward Torpedo Room - Tubes 1 - 2- and 6 - 4 hours to repair each tube. Fired 4 at SM - Dud Fired 3 at SM - Hit and sunk. Chasing the rest of thee convoy. 2025 - Fired #10 at Converted Factory Ship - Dud. Fired 4 at CFS - Hit Fired 5 at CFS - Dud Manned deck gun. 13 hits on CFS and he's on fire 36 more hits and he's sunk. 2049 - Chasing remainder of convoy and repairs continuing - Shadowing an Oil Tanker. Secured deck gun. 2138 - Motor room leaks repaired - Continuing forward torpedo room repairs. 2354 - #1 tube repaired and reload underway. Rmks 4 - 7 Nov - 0004 - #1 tube loaded. Repairs underway on tubes 2 and 6. 0051 - Repairs completed on #2 tube and relooad underway. 0110 - #2 reload complete. 0122 - Repairs completed on #6 tube. Moved in for surface torpedo attack, flank speed. 0136 - Fired #1 at Oil Tanker - Hit and sunk. Fired 2 at Small Freighter #1 - Hit and sunk. Fired 6 at Small Freighter #2 - Dud. Torpedoes expended. Manned deck gun - 17 rounds left. 15 hits on Freighter #2 and on fire 2 more hits on Small Freighter #2. All ordinance expended. Broke contact and radioed information in and headed for Pearl.
