Patrol_narrative
6/10/42 SCULPIN on station Java Sea 5-12S, 119-01E with green crew. 6/11/42 0528hrs 2-23N, 109-16E Submerged Attack on lone TROOP TRANSPORT. After 1 premature and 1 dud torpedo, USS Sculpin struck first of many blows against the Evil Empire by sinking TROOP TRANSPORT with 2 fish fired within 650 yds. Victim took 8 minutes to sink - Sculpin surfaced so all hands on could witness results of our personal entry into this war. All hands got turn at periscope or on bridge to personally observe our first victory. Crew not as green as before - taking their jobs a little more seriously. The reality of WAR now 'sinking in' - pun intended. 6/11/42 1933hrs 2-11N, 109-06E Night Surface Attack Small UNESCORTED Convoy (4 Marus) OIL TANKER, LG FREIGHTER, ARMED MERCH CRUISER, SM FREIGHTER. Fired 9 fish all within 800 yds: 3 DUDS ----1 PREMATURE ---- 2 HITS ---- 3 MISS. 1953hrs Sunk 1 ARMED MERCH CRUISER. Convoy scattered - unable to catch up - lost contact 2022hrs. Resumed patrol. 6/12/42 0840hrs 2-07N, 108-24E Day Submerged Attack Small ESCORTED Convoy 2 Marus, 1 ESCORT. Lead tgt large FREIGHTER, 2nd tgt OIL TANKER. DD roaming in front of column - no active sonar. At 900 yds TANKER sent to meet ancestors with 2 fish from bow. Swung stern and 2 fish at FREIGHTER 700 yds - 2 apparent misses - tgt evading and we couldn't stay around to watch. DD woke up and 'baptized' SCULPIN on our way to 250 ft. Total of 9 dc's - shake rattle and roll but no damage. Our getaway seemed too easy - . We're not that good yet - he must be pretty bad! Fine with us! 1050hrs free and clear - no sign of freighter or dd. Resumed patrol -3 fish left. 6/12/42 1-44N, 106-18E 16220hrs to 1944hrs SCULPIN participated in group religious experience. Were blessed by 4 bombs while coming to 'scope depth at 1620. All near misses no damage that laundry can't fix. Then 3 hour cat and mouse game with 2 good DD's dropping 20+ dc's. We escaped at test depth with less than 10 ft beneath us. Don't know where they came from and don't know where they went. No clue why 2 experienced DD's and air cover were in the area - maybe looking for us? No sight or sound of any other ships in area. Pushed battery and O2 to limit - minor leaking numerous compartments - repaired. 1941hrs escaped - resumed patrol. 6/13/42 2028 Night Surface Attack Small UNESCORTED Convoy 1 STANDARD MERCHANT and 1 TANKER. Fired last bow fish at MERCHANT 800 yds. Premature detonation halfway to tgt. Last 2 stern fish at TANKER 950yds. 1 premature 1 dud. 2042hrs Deck Gun Attack on MERCHANT - 87 shells fired - 82 hits - 2107hrs MERCHANT finally sunk. All torpedoes expended. Heading home looking for small target on the way - still have 8 rounds for hirohito 6/22/42 Returned to Base. Total Fuel used 50408 gal (50%). Torpedo performance: 6 hits 5 misses 5 duds 4 premees All fish set specified depths fired at less than 975 yds. Total 4 ships sunk (1 by deck gun) I consider this patrol to be only a minor success, due to the UNACCEPTABLE performance of 9 MK14's. This crew however, has performed above expectations and continues to improve as an effective fighting unit. Sculpin eagerly awaits our next assignment.
