// IMMEDIATE // From: Lcdr Andrew Miller Commanding Officer SS199 Tautog To: Cdr. J. Sauder CO SubRon5A cc: ComSubPac Date: 10/27/42 re: Patrol Report (June 02 Cycle 4) REMARKS: 1. Departed Freemantle Fri. 10/09/42 2320hrs for J-4 as per squadron requirements. All bunkers topped up - fuel on board 100k gals. Estimated transit time 6 days, 16k9 gals. All systems working 100%, crew-level at complement. 2. Arrived Java Mapping Wed 10 July. Ran one engine surfaced, submerging 0500hrs and 1600hrs, surfacing 0900hrs and 1900hrs. Continued drills during transit zone ensured high state on-board morale and boat readiness. Rdvd with Sculpin 2100hrs 6:50S 117:35E for update and xfer of supplies. Transited for J-4 with initial patrol box to intercept N/S movement through Makassar Strait. 3. All torpedoes checked as per manual. All settings for patrol as per orders. Ordinance load: 24 x Mk14s, 95 shells. 4. Contacts: 1. 10/18/42: 0634hrs, hs detected, faint. 3 sets detected over next 4 hours. Visualed DDs - probable patrol. Went deep and evaded. 2. 07/13/45: 0615hrs, visual on probable Std Merchant 078°r, AOB40. To pd and started track. Second vessel astern probable trooper. 0637hrs, fired #8-10 set 20'. All duds. 0642hrs, fired #7 at Trooper. Hit. Target aflame. 0649hrs, fired #1. Hit. 0710hrs, crew abandoned ship. Opened distance, surfaced and sank with gun fire. 3. 10/20/42: 0107hrs, running at pd, multiple hs suddenly pinging. Early detection. Dived to evade. First rack of depth charges very close. Much damage. Aft torpedo room heavy leaking. Engine#2 heavy damage. Crews' Quarters heavy leaking. Radio Room heavy leaking. Fwd planes inoperable. Fuel tanks severe leaking. Aft battery compartment minor leaking. Over the following 40mins, multiple attacks, but no further damage - running at 250'. 0128hrs, chlorine detected, initiated emergency procedures. 0143hrs, initial blow rqd, set tubes for 5' contact hit. Fired #4 filled with rubbish. 0155hrs, passing 200', second blow. For some reason all hs disappeared - did the jettison work? Blew again and surfaced at 2/3 operating stern planes manually. Unable to use conning tower hatches. Bridge with severe damage, no SD, no gun, no scopes. Turned to return to base. Submerged 0500hrs, ran at 150', bow planes still inoperable. Repaired the following evening. 5. Ordinance report: 5 x Mk14s, 5 shells used. 2 hits, 3 duds, 0 'misses', 0 prematures. 6. Casualty Report: 3 ratings transferred to base hospital. 7. Docked Freemantle yesterday a.m., 10/26/42. Awaiting repair slot. 8. NOTES: 1.
