// IMMEDIATE // From: Lcdr Andrew Miller Commanding Officer SS199 Tautog To: Cdr. J. Sauder CO SubRon5A cc: ComSubPac Date: 05/01/42 re: Patrol Report (April 02 Cycle 2) REMARKS: 1. Departed Pearl Harbour Tues. 03/03/42 2315hrs for F-2 as per squadron requirements. All bunkers topped up - fuel on board 99k gals. Estimated transit time 17 days, 41k6 gals. Unable to refuel at Midway due to current strategic situation. Delay in departure due to late arrival of new modification of Desalinisation Unit cones. Continuing problems in supply system between CFOT2 and main engine 2. 2. Arrived Formosa mapping zone Fri 20 March. Transiting for F2. Ran one engine surfaced, submerged during daylight hours apo. Continued drills during transit zone ensured high state on-board morale and boat readiness. Desal modifications appeared to be working well though with slightly reduced output. Transited north of Formosa to assume patrol line between 25:30N/120:00E and 25:10N/121:00E to interdict IJN and merchant movements through Formosa Strait. 3. All torpedoes checked as per manual. All settings for patrol as per orders. Ordinance load: 24 x Mk14s, 95 shells. 4. Arrived patrol area F-2 Monday, 03/23/42 p.m. 5. Contacts: 1. 03/23/42: 0419hrs, Sudden unannounced shots hit water close by.Ordered flank and crash dive. Evasive action taken. Flash signature indicated enemy less than 2k yds off port beam. 3 injuries from forward deck party working on capstan. (see Casualty). Pos 25:32N/121/03E. Tx'd in the clear. 0420hrs, submerging, sonar picked up 5 sets of HS. Est depth 250'. Headed down to max available.0421hrs, damage reports: Crew Quarters, Aft Battery Compartment and Aft WAT. 0423hrs, bottomed out and began evasive action. Seven sets of HS. 0424hrs, first rack of DCs astern, no further damage. Damage update: minor leaks in Crew Quarters and Aft Battery Compartment. Manifold controls for Aft WAT inoperative. Minimum repair time 2hrs. 0449hrs, chlorine gas detected in Aft Battery Compartment. Sealed area and began emergency procedures. Went to p/d and set forward tubes for contact at 5'. 0508hrs, detected, manouvering, DCs, no further damage. Again at 0528hrs and 0535hrs. 0555hrs, 5 sets HS astern, 2 off port quarter, fading. Air quality seriously deteriorating. Sun rising & decision made to surface - scuttle or escape. 0610hrs, surfaces at 2/3 slowly. Visual on 2 DDs 6k+ yds astern. IDd as Asashio- & Shiratsuyu-type DDs. To flank - problems with #2 lines meant maximum speed of 16kts. Opened fore and aft torpedo room hatches to vent boat. 0618hrs, visual lost. 0625hrs, back to 2/3 for recharge. 0636hrs, Crew Quarters breech repaired. 0655hrs, Aft Battery Compartment breech repaired, flooding finished. 0700hrs, secured deck crews and submerged to 100'. 0805hrs, 3 sets of HS on sonar, manouvered to avoid. 1132hrs, aft WAT manifolds replaced. Evasion successful, returnrd to patrol line. 2. 03/02/45: 1604hrs, visual on some type of vessels at 6+ miles. Assumed local fishermen. Decided to investigate. Approached submerged. Surfaced at 17:49hrs, full precautions at 1kyds. Fired some AA. Vessel hove-to. Just local fishermen. Lt Sharp, with some French, was told that very few IJN or Merchant vessels using Saigon since the Phillipines went down. Politely refused offer of local alcohol. 3. 03/29/42: 1343hrs, LS detected 074°r. To s/a. 25:12N/120:56E. 1344hrs, visual on vessel - probable small freighter. Track started. Turned in to target. 1350hrs, confirmed ID, est 3k5yds, 9kts, course 050°t. 1354hrs, track confirmed, est 2k1yds, 9kts, 050°t. Good intercept solution. Set for 17'. 1356hrs, est 1k5yds, 8.5kts, 050°t. 1358hrs, est 1kyds, 8kts. Fired #1. No explosion. 1359hrs, fired #2. No explosion. With Formosa in sight, abandoned attack. Reviewed track data. Appeared perfect. 4. 04/05/42: 0840hrs, LS detected 094°r. To s/a, nil visual. To p/d, nil visual. Turned into contact at 2/3. 0855hrs, Visual on probable AMC, 005°r. Started track. 0901hrs, confirmed medium AMC, est 10k4yds, 14kts, 015°t. Visual on additional 2 ships, probable troopers. 0904hrs, attack solution not good on AMC, changet target to stern trooper and increased to std. 0904hrs, est 9k2yds, 12kts, 015°t. 0910hrs, est 7k2yds, 12kts, 014°t. Attack solution not good, requiring long shot with target opening. 0928hrs, target had turned. 0931hrs, est 2k8yds, 11kts, 028°t. Set for 25'. Decision to fire at 2k5yds. 0933hrs, fired #1, premature detonation after 30secs. Abandoned attack, resumed patrol line. Reviewed track data. Better intercept impossible after target manouvered. Resumed patrol line. 5. 04/10/42: 0225hrs, 2 vessels visualed distant. 0227hrs, confirmed ID on 2 sampans, 3k5yds, 2kts, 095°r. Closed in for attack keeping boat profile low. 0244hrs, placed two rounds ahead of vessels. Small arms fire returned from one. Sank vessel with 3 rounds. Closed in on other. Boarded. Japanese 'fishermen'. No documents found. 0316hrs, retreated and sank with 2 rounds. 6. Continuing problems with the fuel pump to No.2 Main Engine finally caused termination of patrol, as a maximum of 3 knots was able to be reached. No spares on board. Decision made midday 04/10/42 to return to Pearl. 7. Ordinance report: 3 x Mk14s, 7 shells used. 8. Casualty Report: Fagundes, Antonio, S2c broken wrist Ouro Preto, Dinho, F2c broken arm Santos, Lulu, EM2c fractured skull All transferred to based hospital. 9.
