In Santa Maria

So silent, worshipful,
My feet pad through the halls
Anoint myself with the water
Touch my forehead, heart,
Left, right, to cleanse myself
Foot my way quietly to the backrows
Of the main chapel
Kneel

Grazie for allowing me
To see the grandeur of this sanctuary
Pray
Clear the mind
Then rise and walk
Short prayer at each chapel
Look up to the ceiling
Close my eyes with my face still raised
Become dizzy and pretend
I'm rising to heaven
The holiness of this sacred place
Seeps into me
And for a moment
I feel...

Like the twinkling of a star,
The moment passes,
but though I have already opened my eyes
The magic still remains.
