Sammye Steddum Higgins-- Obituary from Abilene Reporter News

ALBANY -- Sammye Steddum Higgins, 88, died Friday in Albany.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Albany First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Tunnell officiating. Burial will be in Albany Cemetery, directed by Morehart Mortuary.

Mrs. Higgins was born in Mills County and graduated from high school in Berryhill. She worked as a licensed vocational nurse at hospitals in Albany, Kermit, Pecos and Fairfield. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Ocie Lee Steddum, whom she married in 1930; and Ed Higgins, whom she married in 1969.

Survivors include three children, Mary Belle Steddum Jones of Mentone, Ocie Mozelle Steddum Bartee of Albany and Thomas D. Steddum of Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico; three sisters, Imogene Cox Burrus of Abilene, Savonne Cox Giddins of Midland and Carlene Cox Craver of Breckenridge; one brother, Glen Cox of Haskell; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Remodeling Fund or a favorite charity and left at the funeral home.

Roger Lee Hoover, 44, of Joplin, died 5:35 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2006, after a long illness.
He was born March 26, 1961, in Dodge City, Kan., to Jerry and Donna (Sanders) Hoover. Mr. Hoover was a lifelong area resident. He had been a compliance operator for the railroad working for Smith Chambers. He had also worked as a machinist.
He is survived by his fiance, Sue Junken, of Joplin; his parents, Jerry and Donna Hoover, of Joplin; three children and their spouses, Sheila and Jeremy Hooper, of Granby, Kelly and Jonathan Nelson, of Joplin, and Roger and Meghan Hoover Jr., of Joplin; one stepdaughter and her spouse, Lisa and Zach Hight, of Mound Valley, Kan.; and six grandchildren, Matthew Hopper, Luckey, Kaylynn and Sally Nelson, Gavyn Hoover and Gavin Hight.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at New Salem Cemetery with Brother Fred Mills officiating. Pallbearers will be Ernie Burdick, Dave Hamilton, Andy McCaslin, Zach Hight, Kevin Bogle and Joe Raines. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Roger Lee Hoover Memorial Fund for expenses in care of P.O. Box 66, Neosho, Mo., 64850.
Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, of Neosho.

Mary Steddum was born Feb. 21, 1920 in Houston. She was the
daughter of William and Agnes McCollum. She graduated from
Childress High School in 1937 and moved to Ft. Worth. She attended
Brantley Draughon Business College in 1938 and later night school
at TCU. Mary worked for the State Department in Washington, D.C.
and transferred to Fort Worth and worked for several federal
agencies. She was a charter member of St. Philip Presbyterian
Church of Hurst and a charter member of Fort Worth Banker's Wives
Club. She married Colby E. Steddum in 1947. Mary was preceded in
death by her husband in 1988 and an infant daughter, Nancy, in
1950. She enjoyed traveling, china painting, bridge and spending
time with her family and friends.

Joe M. Steddum was: born in Plainview, Texas, February 5, 1926. He was called home to he with the Lord on Monday, November 14, 1994, in Mabank, Texas, where he and his wife, Betty, lived. Bro, Steddum was a dedicated family man with three sons and one daughter, ten grandchildren and two) great-grandchildren.

Brother Steddum was saved and baptized in November of 1951 at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Lomita under the ministry if Brother E. L. Thurmond.

He surrendered to preach in 19.52 and was licensed on December 7, 1954, and ordained on February 24, 1962, by the same church. He attended California Missionary Baptist Institute and Seminary in Bellflower for six years from 1957 through 1962, being one of the first students of the school.

Brother Steddum's pastoral ministry was all in California churches. They include Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church (now First Missionary Baptist Church) of Redlands on two occasions for a total of 17 years, Oxnard and Port Hueneme, Bakersfield, Central Missionary Baptist Church of Wasco, and First Missionary Baptist Church of Oildale. Upon leaving Oildale, he and Betty moved to Mabank, Texas, where they were working in the landmark Missionary Baptist Church of Mabank.

Brother Steddum's love and zeal for the Lord and His churches never wavered over all the years of service. He stood for the truth of the New Testament churches and preached and taught it where ever he was. He was a pastor's pastor and will be missed by all who knew him.
