Mrs. Steddum was the youngest of eight children born to Dan and Sally Adeline "Addy" Hagar on Oct. 15, 1915, in Auglaize County, Ohio. Edith moved with her family in 1918, at the age of 3, to settle in the Texas Panhandle near Texhoma, where the land was plentiful, economical and bountiful. The Hagar family enjoyed their new lives until the Dust Bowl days of the '30s made farming a difficult occupation.
In the year 1933, the lovely Edith Hagar married Homer Jay Hataway and settled near Stratford, where they continued the effort of growing crops but the wind blew constantly and the lack of rain caused the family to seek other employment. In Moore County, near Sunray, they were building gasoline refineries and carbon black plants, so they moved once again in the year 1936 to Sunray and settled down to raise seven children.
She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Sunray and continued to live a Christian life. She was known for her sweet personality, kind disposition and for helping those "older" friends and acquaintances unable to help themselves. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; her husband, Homer Hataway; and her second husband, Paul Steddum.
Survivors include seven children, Harold Homer Hataway and Jim Hataway, both of Sunray, Donald Dale Hataway of Joplin, Mo., Darlene Keeton of Enid, Okla., Joe Hataway of Perry, Coleen Seright of Amarillo and Marlene Irwin of Newcastle, Okla.; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
