Review of Odd Man Out by Rising Sun
Episode 148
Aired January 22,
2002
As this episode
unfolds I am reminded that there is my truth their truth and THE TRUTH.
This proved to be a
balance episode for the characters.
Everyone seemed to be in there in one shape or form.
1. Bud is a juror for a murder trial that Mac
is prosecuting and Harm is defending.
2. Sergui is applying to INS for American
status.
3. Sergui is enamored of Singer and Harm thinks
that that is a no-no.
4. Bud and Harriett are having a Super bowl Party.
5. Sturgis is on TAD to a sub (ah heaven),
where he had to deal with a wife wanting to divorce a sailor just before he
deployed.
6. Sturgis and Mac compete to go to the Super
bowl with Harm.
The main story line
however was a bitter lesson for Bud, a case of a little knowledge going a long
way.
As Harm faced off
against Mac in the court martial of a Navy medical corpsman accused of
murdering a Marine sergeant during a training exercise. Despite the members comprising of battle
hardened folk as well as a corpsman Bud, feels himself to be the expert, and
proceeds to use his knowledge of the law during deliberations to case doubt on
the facts as perceived by the other jurors. At the first ballot the vote was
four guilty and one not guilty (Bud). Eventually he turned the entire count
around and there was a complete turn around to not-guilty. Shades of the motion
picture “Twelve Angry Men” here.
Harm is not a happy lawyer at winning the case. Even Mac had to tease him and say, “Are you always this cranky
when you win a case?” Bud is now exposed to the real world as he slowly begins to realize that he may have been
the only one to think the corpsman not guilty. As he follows Mac then Harm he also finds out that not one person
save the accused thinks that justice has been done.
In the meantime
Harm warns his brother against becoming involved with the “icebreaker”
Singer. I had a certain part of the
anatomy in mind when he said that.
Singer is up to something – stay tuned for that ride.
The hardship of
having your man deploy for six months at a time can be a daunting thing. Sue Ellen (as in Dallas?) newly married with
no other family but her husband could not face the six-month separation… but in
the end she did. Hey this is TV!
After much
speculation not to mention begging; who did Harm go to the super bowl with and
where did they sit? The answer to question one – Skates and question two – in
an F-14 as they patrolled the airspace above.
