Before talk about Evangelion, first I need to talk about manga. What is manga? It is Japanese cartoon. It is as simple as that. Nothing to do with science or computer. There are other excellent manga and these are few example.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a story about how would an armageddon occur. The rest will be written in story line.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Shinseiki Evangelion in Japanese) is Anno Hideaki's latest creation, which caused a major impact (what a fitting word isn't it?) to the anime world. Which began as a TV-Series developed and found its way to the movies, to comic books, even concerts were opened, where solely the Evangelion Soundtracks were played.
After scoring a massive hit in Japan, Evangelion is now spreading its wings all over the globe. The original series are already available in subtitled and dubbed versions. The reasons for Evangelion's success are varied, but there are some major points, which make Evangelion unique among all other anime.
At first glance EVA may seem to be just another sci-fi story, but it is much more than that. The characters are not just heroes piloting mechas to save mankind/earth - in fact they have profound personalities, face everyday problems as anyone else and concern themselves with philosophical / religious themes. In fact the whole Evangelion project deals with the existence of mankind and its evolution.
People can identify themselves with the characters, as these "heroes" are people just like you and me and face the same problems as we do, feel love, hapiness, anger, hatred as everyone else. It is fascinating to think about the philosophical views offered by the characters. One example: "Humans, no matter how they try, they will never completely drive sadness away. But you know, you can forget sadness for a while if you interact and that makes life worth living."
A side of EVA valued by many fans is the plot, which houses connections to metaphysical and religious theories, ancient prophecies and supernatural mysteries. Even the fundamental basics of reality lose their value. (comparisons to the X-Files were made). God and Creation are viewed from an never before seen angle, implying man's attempts to become god himself. EVA is a very unique creation, which made a name even among people who usually do not watch anime.
