Here is all you need to know about the plot of "Intersections" in order to follow "Succession."
1. Both Madeline and Paul were recruited in the 1970's - Madeline to work for Section Two as an undercover operative; Paul to work for Section One (and as the assumed successor to Adrian);
2. Madeline's undercover assignment involved working as an assistant to a professor who performed interrogation, torture, and mind-control experiments for Eastern Bloc countries;
3. Madeline and Paul met in 1980 when Paul was captured by the Soviets during a mission; Madeline helped him escape captivity. Afterwards, they had a brief affair that Madeline ended several months later (for reasons that aren't really relevant to this story);
4. At the end of Intersections, George revealed to Madeline that he had plans to undermine and eventually overthrow Adrian, in order to take over the leadership of the Sections himself; he sought Madeline's assistance in achieving this.
That's it! (Well, that's not all of the story, but that's all you need to remember before moving on to this one.) Intersections left off in 1980; this story picks up three years later, in 1983.
