| CLEAR CANVAS The foggy mist was heavy. The world around me seemed but a clear canvas on which to paint. A dream world arose. We drove down our street, the same one we had drove for the past 17 years. And yet it was different. The calm ocean on one side of the street seemed so utterly unreal. The mist hung over the water, and blotted out the land across it. It seemed that the mist might slowly fade away, to reveal a unexplored island or a small boat with high sides that held people from an unheard of land. Even familiar places seemed new and adventurous, the way a child see's the world. "I wonder where that street leads?" I wondered as a little girl, and then let my imagination do the rest. As I explored these seemingly 'new' surroundings, my imagination again went into high gear, just like when I was a little girl. Going down another familiar street, the river on the left was gone. Whited out, it seemed to have disapeared. I saw a white cloudy sky, where once there was a river. And so, driving along the road beside this amazing sight, I felt high up in the mountains going along the edge of a cliff. When I looked over the edge of the cliff, it seemed to be a bottemless fall into the white misty sky. The vibrant colors of red, organge, and yellow were muted. Anything visable seemed faded and dulled. Were they really there, or had my immagination taken over? |
