Getting a Pet

Pets are great!

Did you know:
-pets relieve loneliness, reduce tension and lower blood pressure while calming and cheering you up?
They do!

With all the things they can do for you, you need to care for your pet yourself.

Before you get a pet you need to think about these questions:
-Why do you want a pet?
-Are you ready to commit to the responsibility of having a pet?
-Do you know what type of pet would suit you best? Why?

Any relationship is a two-way street.
What can you do for a pet?
Can you...
-give it your time?
-give it the desired amount of space?
-give the pet exercise?
-get it the neccessary veterinary care?
-keep up with the cost?
Are there any restrictions where you live about pets?

What type of pet would suit you best?
-Would it be a certain type of animal?
--A fish is one of the easiest and smallest pets to take care of. They do not take up much room, but need to be fed and have their tanks cleaned.
--Small Animals can be great first pets. Some of them are nocturnal which means they sleep during the day. Although some may bite, they can be very fun to play with. The small pets also need lots of care.
--Birds are cheerful and do need care. They need cages to fit their size and lots of company. They are the best pets to have if you want to have a converstion, because they can learn to say phrases and repeat your vocal sounds.
--A dog can be affectionate and active. It needs love and attention along with lots of exercize.
--A cat can be more independant, and needs less room, but it needs attention too.
--A horse is very large and needs much more room than many other animals. It would be a great pet for an active person because it needs a lot of exercize.

Different pets have different life spans:
-Fish - 2 to 3 years
-Small Animals - 2 to 6 years
-Bird - 6 to 12 years or more
-Dog - 10 to 20 years
-Cat - 14 to 20 years
-Horse - 20 to 25 years

After you decide what type of pet you would like, you need to decide:
Which type of Breed would suit you best?
Should you get a new puppy or an older dog?
Which sex should you get?

After you get a pet you need to take care of it.
You need to:
-feed it
-care for it
-give it proper medical attentio; checkups and find the closest emergency veteranarian for emergencies.
-spay or neuter it
-give it attention
-have fun!
