' (What is) the Xing? The shape of imitating. (What is) the Yi (the mind)? The mind (generated) from the Xin (heart). ' 1This is to say that Yi, the wisdom mind, is generated from the emotional mind; Xin. Xin is the first mind, it's charecteristics are excitable and agile, whereas Yi is calm, clear and accurate. ...' man of the million living things has a "Ling" (supernatural spirit). (He) is able to feel and respond to everything. This is because (he has a) Xin (emotional mind) internally to comprehend the surrounding objects. Objects are external but he "comprehending" is internal. ' 1' (When) the Xin (emotional mind) is steady, the Shen (spirit) is calm. The Shen is calm, the Xin is peaceful. The Xin is peaceful, then it is quite and clean. It is quite and clean, then nothing exists. When nothing exists, the Qi will be transported (smoothly). When Qi is transported smoothly, then the imagination disappears. When the feeling is clear, then the Shen and Qi are mutually connected. In this case, millions of Qi return to their roots. ' ...' " The three Yi's must be linked together" means Xin Yi, Qi Yi, and the Li Yi must be connected into one. This is what is called the three internal connections." Amoung the three, the Xin is the planner, the Qi is the marshal, and the Li is the generals and soldiers. Because if the Qi is not full, then the Li will not be sufficient. Although the Xin has the plan, it is still in vain (i.e., empty). Therfore, when the Qi and Yi are trained well, then the marshal is able to use Yi to control Li and correspond internally with the Xin Yi. (In) all the connections of these three Yis, the Qi must be especially the first concern. ' 2 The Xin must be leisurely means that when you train, the Xin should not be alarmed and hasty. Because when alarmed, then (you) have the Yi of fright and fear. When (you are) hasty, then you have the Yi of fast and abrupt. When (you are) frightened, then the Qi must be weak; and when (you are) weak and disordered, then (the movement of) hands and feet, are not manageable. If (you have) not reached the achievements from daily practice, then (you are) empty internally, and when (you) encounter the event, you will b e scared and withdrawing. (In this case), there is no one, when he faces the opponent, who is not scared and hasty. Therefore, the Xin must be leisurely. In fact, this corresponds with the Qi externally and internally. The eyes must be venomous (Du) means the eyes are acute, sharp and stern, with a mean and serious look. (Your) original Qi must be full and abundant in order to have these. Therefore, when practicing fist techniques (i.e., martial arts), it is no more than training Qi and Li. Training Li is able to strengthen the body, and training Qi is able to enhance the spirit of vitality. Those whose Gongfu is deep are able to gather (the Qi) at the (Lower) Dan Tian, the five internal organs are comfortable and expanded. ' 3A major difference of Hsing Yi , is that the first mind, the so-called emotional mind, Xing, is not to be suppressed, rather it is cultivated since Xing Yi imitates the animal form, mind and spirit. In some other internal martial arts, and Qi Gong; the emotional mind is suppressed and dominated by Yi, the wisdom mind. This can not be reached through force or done (simply) from imitating. When it is time to be calm, it is quite and transparent. In this position, (you) are steady like a mountain. When it is time to move, like thunder and like (a mountain). When it is time to move, like thunder and like (a mountain) collapsing. The speed of emitting (Jin) is like lighting. In addition, when calm, nothing is not calm. The surface and the internal, the top and the bottom, all without disorder and the meaning (the way) of inhibiting each other (i.e., stagnation). When moving, nothing does not move. The left and the right, the front and the rear, all without pulling (dragging), and the shape of swiftly moving around. It is just like water flowing downward, it is so powerful that nothing is able to stop it. It is like (a canon is) fired internally, when (it is) shot, (you are) not fast enough to cover your ears. Without considering thinking, without bothering to plan, simply reach the goal without expectation. (When) this (goal) is reached without intention, then isnt it the natural way? ' 4 This is hsing-i, the highest level of achievement: the mind is mindless; you do nothing and have done everything. In the emptiness we find prenatal bodies. But we do not be overly concerned about this. If you try too hard, it will elude you. Instead of trying to achieve it, pretend you already have it. This will help your mind. After all, the mind is the embodiement of your actions: therefore, hsing-i is mind boxing.' 5 1) XingYiquan, Theory, Applications, fighting Tactics and Spirit, by Liang, Shou-Yu & Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming, page 10.2) Jwing-Ming, op.sit., pages 60, 62. 3) Jwing-Ming, op.sit., pages 64, 65. 4) Jwing-Ming, op.sit., page 217. 5) Hsing-I, Chinese Mind-Boxing,, by Robert Smith, pages 92-95, Advise From the Masters, by Kuo Yun-Shen |
