In the first season we are introduced to the ever clutzy, sometimes ditzy, always hungery, yet loveable Serena. She spends most of her time hanging out at the arcade mooning over Andrew and being teased by Andrew's friend Darien who always calls her "meatball head."
Knowing that danger was coming, Serena's cat Luna reveals
that Serena can become the super heroine Sailor Moon and
tells her about her new powers. Overnight she goes from an
everyday middle school student to the protector of the galaxy . . .
not an easy task for one person. Luna also tells her that they
must find the Moon Princess so that they can protect her help
her defeat the Negaverse.

Meanwhile, deep in their secluded hideout, the evil
Queen Beryl orders one of her Generals (Jedite) to suck the energy from the humans of Earth. Their enery will be used to strengthen the "Negaforce" (Queen Metalia) and allow them to take over Earth.

Through her first battles against Jedite's monsters, Sailor Moon does fairly well, but she often crys and whines when she gets stuck in a little trouble...but luckily the mysterious masked man, Tuxedo Mask, always comes to her rescue. Then one day Serena meets up with the smartest girl in her school, Amy Anderson. Through a series of events they discover that Amy is actually the sailor scout, Sailor Mercury!

The next scout to appear is Sailor Mars. While Amy and Serena are getting good luck charms at the Cherry Hill Temple they meet Raye Hino who lives there and takes care of the temple with her grandfather. Just like Ami, when Raye is attacked by one of Jedite's monsters the symbol of her planet appears and Luna gives her a transformation stick.

Through the next battles the three scouts become an awesome team, but Raye and Serena are continually fighting with each other about everything...especially Tuxedo Mask, who continues to come to their rescue. Finally the scouts showdown with Jedite and win, but they soon find out that they're not done yet...Queen Beryl sends out her next General, Nephlite. Nephlite uses the power of the stars to bring certain individuals to their peak energy output and then steals their energy. His plans are continually foiled by the scouts and in the end Queen Beryl has him killed for not fulfilling his mission. He had become very close to Serena's best friend Molly Baker and he saved her life when the Doom and Gloom girls almost killed her...but he is killed in the process.

The next General is Zoycite, she/he is given a different task than the other generals... she/he must release the seven rainbow crystal carriers and take their crystals from them. With the seven rainbow crystals, Queen Beryl can put together the Imperium Silver Crystal and take over Earth. But things don't go well for Zoycite either, during her/his first encounter with the scouts, the next scout shows up...Sailor Jupiter. Sailor Jupiter is actually the new transfer student at Serena's school. Everyone is afraid of her because she has a reputation of beating up people. But Serena discovers that Lita is a very loyal, nice, boy-crazy person...and a great cook too!

As the scouts try to get the crystals before Zoycite, they find themselves competing with Tuxedo Mask for the crystals. Apparently he doesn't know who he is, because he never remebers being Tuxedo Mask when he wakes up and he continually has a disturbing dream about a princess who wants him to rescue her. Finally after capturing one of the crystals, he is able to remember...he's really Darien!! After losing three of the crystals to Tuxedo Mask, Zoycite wants a showdown with him, winner takes the crystals. She/he traps the Sailor Scouts so that he will come rescue them, but her/his plan is foiled by the next Sailor scout, Sailor Venus. Sailor Venus had just come back from England where she was fighting as Sailor V. Artemis, her cat guardian, had awakened her a while ago and she was just now joining the rest of the scouts. Afterward, Darien plans to fight Zoycite, but Serena follows him and gets trapped in the building with him. Zoycite tries to kill them while they're in the elevator, but Serena changes into Sailor Moon in front of Darien and saves them. After the shock that Sailor Moon is really Serena, Darien changes into Tuxedo Mask and shocks Sailor Moon!!

Zyocite and Tuxedo Mask start to fight, but Zyocite cheats and sends an ice crystal through his back and almost kills him even though she/he knows Queen Beryl wants him alive. Beryl had discovered that Darien was the long ago Prince of Earth, who had been in love with the Moon Princess! As Darien lays on the floor, near death, Serena becomes intranced and the rainbow crystals transport themselves to her! They come together and form the Imperium Silver Crystal and transform Serena into Princess Serena, the Moon Princess they had been searching for!! Then Queen Beryl transports Darien to her lair and kills Zoycite for trying to kill him.

Zoycite is followed by Malacite, Zoycite's lover and teacher. Darien is brainwashed and becomes and agent of the Negaverse. Malachite and Darien fight often because they do not agree on how they should capture energy. The scouts become confused because now the man that always came to their rescue is now trying to kill them!

Finally, they find a tunnel leading to Beryl's lair. As they travel down it, they are teleported by the spirit of Queen Serenity (Princess Serena's mother) to the Moon Kingdom. She reveals to them their past lives as members of the Silver Millenium court. When they are transported back to the tunnel, the scouts are confronted by Malachite and Sailor Moon defeats him with "Moon Cosmic Power!"

Now comes the final battle. They are traveling in the polar ice caps (that's where the tunnel came out) and are confronted by the Doom and Gloom girls. One by one, each of the scouts are killed except for Sailor Moon. She is then transported to Beryl's lair and is confronted by Beryl herself...and Prince Darien. As Sailor Moon and Darien begin to fight, Sailor Moon tries to remind him of the past, she holds out the locket that she gave to him long ago and tells him that they can be together again if he will touch it. The power of love un-brainwashed him, but then Beryl hits him in the back with an ice crystal...but before it hits him, he strikes her through the heart with a rose. As Darien dies in Serena's arms, she vows to save Earth from Beryl. Meanwhile, Beryl pleads with the "Negaforce" to give her the power to defeat Sailor Moon. The Negaforce and Beryl combine into "Super" Beryl. Then Sailor Moon appears on the icy landscape and confronts Beryl as Princess Serena. But her power is not strong enough to beat Beryl by herself, so Serena calls on the spirits of the scouts to help her "defeat this witch." Together with the scout's spirits, they defeat Beryl and blast her back to the Negaverse. As Serena is defeating her she wishes that everything would be back to normal, and that she could just be a normal teenager again. The next day, everything is back to normal, the scouts were "reborn," so they don't remember each other, or anything that has happened. And so Serena wakes up running to school late as usual.
