Whether your garden is frozen over or your first freeze is yet to arrive,
it’s never too early to start dreaming about next year’s garden.
If you set aside a little time this winter to plan what to grow next year,
you’ll be rewarded with an early start come spring. Plus, you
can make your green thumb even greener just by reading seed catalogs.
New gardeners, especially, should read seed catalogs to learn about fruit

The online versions of seed company catalogs are quick and easy to use. Plus, they tend to be more up-to-date.

Lucky for us, it’s easier than ever to find healthy garden seeds that were grown organically and come from solid, open-pollinated stock. Even some of the largest seed companies are beginning to offer a wider selection of organic, non-hybrid, and non-chemically-treated seeds. When possible, order garden seeds from companies based in your area. Their varieties are more likely to be well adapted to your soil and climate. The following seed companies (organized by state; skip to the end for Canadian listings) have a great selection of open-pollinated and organic vegetable and herb seeds, and you’ll learn a lot from their informative catalogs. Their extensive offerings are available online and/or via traditional print catalogs.

Fabulous Foods

Phytoestrogens belong to three chemical classes: the isoflavonoids, the lignans and the coumestans. Soybeans and soy products are the major dietary sources of isoflavonoid phytoestrogens, cereal grains and flaxseeds offer--the greatest amount of lignans. beans. peas, pinto and lima beans have coumestan phytoestrogens. best phytoestrogen source is Soy containing a variety of isoflavones, two of which genistein and daidzein are potent phytoestrogens Flaxseed, a lignan, and red clover, a coumestan, are in a strong second behind soy, The following foods, which are high in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and antioxidants, are other good sources of plant estrogens.

Is your immune system less than what you think it should be? Do you fight cold after cold after cold? Are work and sleep all you do because you are too run down to enjoy a hobby or a movie or time with friends? If so, a visit with your doctor and a full physical exam are good ideas.
Recurrent illness or chronic fatigue can be a sign of something serious, like anemia, hypothyroidism, or even cancer. But if your physician pronounces you "well but simply `worn out,'" and sends you home without much of a solution, consider the healing powers of adaptogenic herbs.
Adaptogenic herbs do what their name implies -- assist the body in "adapting" to its environment. Unlike other herbs, such as milk thistle--which directly affects liver cells, or calendula--which acts as a local antiseptic; adaptogenic herbs work on the body as a whole, encouraging a variety of body systems to cope with physical and emotional stress, recover from overwork and protect against disease. Examples include Asian ginseng, Siberian ginseng, ashwaganda, astragalus, ligusticum, shiandra and licorice.
Siberian ginseng. Eleutherococcus senticosus; also called Eleuthero or Siberian ginseng, is an excellent, and well-known, adaptogenic herb.
The clinical prescribing of Eleuthero is considerable throughout the world of botanical medicine. In fact, this herb is a common ingredient in herbal formulas designed to support both the adrenal and immune systems. Siberian ginseng remains one of my favorite adaptogenic herbs. I particularly like it for young and middle-aged people who suffer from fatigue brought on by any sort of stress, including both overwork and emotional duress. I also find that patients with a history of frequent winter colds and flu can reduce the incidence of these viral illnesses by taking Eleuthero throughout the several months of flu season.
Asian ginseng. Panax ginseng or Asian ginseng is similar to its Russian cousin in that it is also may help with conditions like physical exhaustion, nervous prostration or emotional "burnout."
Panax is also an adaptogenic herb. And, like Siberian ginseng, Asian ginseng has an "affinity" for the adrenal, gland, supporting the optimal functioning of the human endocrine system, which includes the adrenal, thyroid and pituitary glands--all important for energy.
Studies suggest that ginseng increases the size and number of cells in the adrenal gland. While scientists have not yet investigated every possible consequence of this effect, it is presumed that ginseng improves the ability of the adrenal glands to respond to stress by enhancing its production of cortisol, our primary anti-stress hormone. Scientists also say that that ginseng extracts may help our whole body to more efficiently make use (or control the levels) of cortisol, and, in this way, cope better with physical and emotional demands.

On january 25.2005 Saphire here, Here,s an update for sites that can assist you in finding and creating your dreams and educating yourself to the level of competency required by you to realize the dreams you carry! The heart and head are created to guide and inspire you. Gardens of 20-50 pounds of seed carefully planted 14 inches to 10 inches deep in hill-side gravel-sandy mountain n hill run off ON THE SNOWYFIRST DAY OF SPRING MARCH 20TH yielded the best gardens I,ve grown in15 years and I've planted ALL kinds of them! (what else are you doingmarch 20th)The site listed and the linked up sites contain LOTS of seed sources forstufflike 1-2 kilogram tomatoes called GIANT BEEFSTEAK(A first choicevegetarian tomatoe incidently!) I got 6-8 inch ARTICHOKES! WHO needs them ya! BUT boiled in a 5 gallon tank by the bushel everyone who could or couldn't afford the $5-$6 each (store cost-$10-$20in restaurant) could try the best ones ever Mountain grown ad packed in the 5-6 pickup trucks we used to harvest the 20 TONS of food that to my suprise grew. THE EXPERIMENT WAS OPPERATED TO SEE IF a garden in the hilly mining district of (no mans land) would in fact generate the food required to live 10 miles off road in a sane quiet zone where one can use a 6 foot saw and drop 20 trees to build a fine outdoor home. Choose a spot with a nice hill of woody trees 150 ft behind the house you build so you can drop trees down the hill in january in case you decide to winter it! Easier by far than carrying wood a mile or two in 40 below weather! CUT BIG TREES 2-4 FT accross and save a couple50ft. trucks to build yourself a do it yourself crane. WITH A 3 OR 4 PULLY BLOCK AND TACKLE AND A CAR HOOD RIGGED TO COUNTER BALANCE ROCKS TO YOUR TREE TRUNKS YOU CAN SINGLE HANDED OR WITH A FRIEND STACK DRILL AND PEG WITH HOMEADE DOWELS THE LOGS INTO A SUPPER FINE HOUSE! NODOUBT YOU'LL WAIT TILL JUNE OR EARLY JULY TO START THE WORK AS BY THE THE GARDEN WILL START ITS UNENDING SUPPLY OF HEARTY FOOD. IGNORE PLANTING RECOMENDATIONS AND PLANT NO LATER THAN MARCH31ST TO GET GOOD ROOTS FOR THE DRY SPELL(JULY AUGUST) AND BRING THE WILD FOODS AND HERBS BOOKS! FORGET ABOUT BEER! 10 POUNDS OF SUGAR,1 PAKET OF YEAST AND 1 OR 2 BURDOCKS ROOTS TO TOPS WILL CREAT BETTER BEVERAGE AND HEALTHYER THAN YOU WILL EVER GET FOR THE OUTRAGEOUS TAX AND RASH PRICING OF DOMESTIC AND IMPORTS!
