Verses 1, 2 Arjuna said: O Krishna, I wish to understand this material energy, the individual consciousness, the field of activity, the knower of the field of activity, knowledge and the goalof knowledge. Lord Krishna said: O Arjuna, the material body is known as the field of activityand those who know this describe those who know this as knowers of the field of activity.
Verse 3 O Arjuna, certainly knowing Me as well within all bodies as the knower of the field of activity such knowledge of the field of activity and the knower of the field is actual knowledge in My advice.
Verse 4 Hear in brief from Me about that field of activities, also what kind of nature it possesses, whattransformations it produces, from whence it was born and from what and what is its influence.
Verse 5 In a unique manner it has been sung in many ways by various sages, by the Vedic hymns, by various aphorisms of Vedanta with its sound logic and reasoning and by conclusive evidence.
Verses 6, 7 The major elements of earth, water, air, fire and ether; the false ego, spiritual intelligence, theunmanifest element in material nature,the ten senses along with the mind and the five objectsof the senses as sound, sight, taste, touch and smell; desire, disdain, happiness, distress, the perceptual faculty of the mind, determination; all this is declared to be the field of activities modified by the six transformations of the physical body beginning with birth and ending with death.
Verses 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
Humilty, pridelessness, nonviolence, tolerance, honesty, rendering service to a bonafide spiritual master, cleanliness, steadfastness; self-control, renouncing the desires of the senses, free from false egoism and aware of the distressful inauspiciousness of birth, old age, diseaseand death. Being without attachment to son, wife and home, equipoised in all situations, consistent,devoid of elation or disapointment regarding favorable or unfavorable situations, preference for solitary places, aversion of mundane society and exclusively performing devotional service unto Me by the unalloyed science of uniting the individual consciousnesswith the Ultimate Consciousness. Always aspiring for self-realization, constantly meditating on the Ultimate Truth as the goal of true wisdom; all this is thus proclaimed as knowledge andwhatever is contrary to this is nescience.
Verse 13 Now I shall explain that which is to be known, realizing which the nectar of immortality is attained; that reality is eternal having Me as the Supreme, beyond cause, beyond effect and designated as Brahman the Ultimate Truth.
Verse 14 With hands and feet ecerywhere, with eyes, heads and faces everywhere, hearing all; that reality exists pervading everything in this world.
Verse 15 That Ultimate Truth is cognizant of all the senses of the material nature; yet is devoid of all material senses, completely unattached yet the sustainer of everything, transcendental to material nature, yet the maintainer of material nature.
Verse 16 Within and without all living entities, that Ultimate truth is stationary as well as mobile; on account of its being subatomic, that Ultimate Truth is incomprehensible and is far away yet also very near.
Verse 17 Without division that Ultimate Truth appears to be divided among all the various living entities and is to be known as the preserver of all living entities and the destroyer as well as the creator.
Verse 18 That Ultimate Truth is declared as the illuminator of all that illuminates, beyond the darknessof ignorance; residing within the heart of everyone it is comprehensible by the wisdom gained from realization by the knowledge of direct experience.
Verse 19 My devotee understanding this field of activity, knowledge and what is to be known thus described in summary becomes qualified for My divine nature.
Verse 20 Know that verily both the material energy and the individual consciousness certainly are beginningless and know that transformations of the body and the three modes of material nature also certainly are produced by the material energy. Verse 21
In the matter of creation the material energy is responsible for cause and effect; in the matter of experiencing happinesss and distress the individual consciousness is declared responsible.
Verse 22 The individual consciousness situated in the material energy certainly experiences the three modes of material nature produced by the material energy; the beguiling infatuation of these three modes of material nature is the cause of a beings innumerable births, superior and inferior in the wombs of varieagated lifeforms.
Verse 23 Within the body, supreme to the individual consciousness; an indwelling observer; a sanctioner, a preserver, an enjoyer and indeed ultimate controller as well is described as the Ultimate Consciousness.
Verse 24 Anyone who understands in this way the individual consciousness and the Ultimate Consciousness also the material energy along with the three modes of material nature; one although existing in any condition never takes birth again.
Verses 25 Some by the science of the individual consciousness attaining communion with the UltimateConsciousness perceive within the self, the Ultimate Consciousness by meditation on the self;others by the discrimination between matter and spirit and others by the science of uniting the individual consciousness with the Ultimate Consciousness by actions.
Verse 26 Yet others without knowing these methods engage in worship by hearing from others; verily they becoming established from listening also transcend the transmigration of death.
Verse 27 O Arjuna, whatever living entity, animate or inanimate comes into being; know they are produced by the interaction between the field of activities and the knower of the field of activities.
Verse 28 Anyone who perceives the Ultimate Consciousness residing equally in all living entities everywhere as the imperishable within the perishable; such a one actually perceives.
Verse 29 By seeing the Ultimate Consciousness equally everywhere, impartially situated, one does notdegrade the embodied self, by the self; therefore reaching the supreme goal.
Verse 30 Anyone who perceives in this way that activities in all respects are being performed only by the material energy; such a one perceives perfectly the embodied self as the non-doer.
Verse 31 When one actually perceives the expansion and diversity of all life forms as situated in the unity of material nature; thereafter at that time the Ultimate Truth is attained.
Verse 32
This Ultimate Consciousness is beginningless, immutable, devoid of any material quality O Arjuna; although situated within the body it never does anything nor is it influenced. Verse 33
As all pervading space is never implicated due to being subtle; similarly the Ultimate Consciousness being all pervading, situated in the body is never implicated.
Verse 34 O Arjuna just as one sun illuminates an entire universe; similarly the Ultimate Consciousness and the individual consciousness illuminates the entire field of activity of the physical body.
Verse 35 Those who by the realization of knowledge can fathom the distinction between the body, the individual consciousness and the Ultimate Consciousness and the liberation of the living entities from the material energy they achieve the Supreme.

In late June and early July, can you smell a sweet, haunting fragrance wafting around the city? It comes from the American Linden or Basswood tree, a large tree, growing up to 130 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 feet, and a rounded crown. The bark is furrowed with large "S" shaped ridges going up the trunk. The Linden is often planted as a shade or street tree because of its fairly rapid rate of growth, plentiful shade and fragrant flowers. In cities its fruit are eaten by squirrels, while in the country its fruit are eaten by chipmunks and other small rodents. White-tailed deer and cottontail rabbits eat the bark and sprouts during the winter. Old basswoods are very frequently hollow, making excellent nesting and den sites for many kinds of birds and mammals. & FLOWERS: The fragrant flowers of the Linden tree hang from the middle of leafy, ribbon-like green bracts in long-stalked clusters. The flowers are tiny, with 5 yellowish-white petals. During the last weeks of June and first weeks of July they exude a powerful, haunting scent that can be detected up to a mile away. The flowers possess a nectar which attracts bees and produces a strong flavored honey. When this tree is in flower it will be full of bees, hence its common name "Bee Tree". During the three weeks that the Lindens bloom, bees forsake most other flowers. The honey that they make of Linden nectar is white in color, and regarded as high in quality. The flowers when gathered and dried can be used to make tea. During the flowering period, the people that manufacture perfumes use the heady scent for their products. & FRUIT: When the flowers go to seed they form small nutlets that contain l to 2 seeds each, clustered beneath large leafy wing bracts which act as parachutes as they carry the seeds to the ground. The fruits are woody and about the size of peas. LEAVES: The leaves are heart-shaped, 4-6 inches long, 3-4 inches wide, dark green & with extremely shiny undersides. When the wind blows, the leaf blades are flung over to reveal a glistening bright underside. WOOD: Linden wood is soft and creamy, and it is much favored by woodcarvers because of its workability (it is said to "cut like cheese") and its even grain. In past centuries it was used to make ship's figureheads and cigar-store Indians. Today it is used for broom handles, beehive frames, piano sounding boards and certain parts of guitars. & BARK: The Linden's inner bark is fibrous and can be twisted and woven into cords, ropes and matting. Native Americans of the Northeastern tribes used it to make bags to carry food in and thongs. Rope was made from it by "retting" - keeping the bark under water for about a month, until the soft tissues rotted away leaving the fibrous tissue. Thread made of Basswood bark was used to stitch together mats made of cattail leaves and the bark was used to bind up warriors wounds. The Iroquois carved masks from the sapwood on the living tree and then split it off from the trunk and hollowed it out from behind. & RANGE: Quebec south to Delaware, Atlantic coast west to Eastern Kentucky. HABITAT: The Linden prefers moist soils of valleys and uplands; in hardwood forests. MYTHOLOGY: The Green Dryads or tree spirits were said to be wedded to Linden trees. In Roman mythology the Linden tree was a symbol of conjugal love and fidelity. What are Interferon Initiators? They are a unique combination of known interferon producers. Never have so many interferon producers, and unique and rare forms of them been brought together in one place at one time. Besides being rich in amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and polysaccharides, it is anti-bacterial and anti-viral. If you have a cold (usually caused by bacteria) or a flu (caused by a virus) it is the anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties of the Reishi mushroom that prove to be so helpful. For this reason, the Reishi mushroom is also referred to as "Royal Reishi." The Shiitake mushroom has a long history of strengthening effects on the stomach, intestines, and of inhibiting tumor growth, It, like the Reishi mushroom, is high in amino acids, trace minerals, and vitamins. In addition to boosting the immune system, it also lowers cholesterol. These properties make it an essential member of this mushroom calcium, magnesium, potassium, and protein. In addition, two doctors, Dr. David Hughes of San Bernardino, CA and Dr. Robert Murphy of Torrington, CT in separate studies have found that Maitake helps lesions become smaller or disappear. Dr. Hughes used Maitake extract mixed with DMSO and saw skin lesions disappear within several days. Other research groups report Maitake helpful in treating chronic fatigue syndrome and chronic hepatitis. Obviously, Maitake plays an invaluable role in making Extend work.

When (1----3)-beta-D-glucanase was injected 1 d after GRN administration, IL-1 productivity and responsiveness to LPS were significantly reduced, but lysosomal enzyme activity and phagocytosis of macrophage and production of ceruloplasmin were similar to those not treated with glucanase. These facts indicate that the induction of the activities of the former group requires longer contact of host cells with the glucan, and the latter group requires a shorter period to achieve fully active stages.

Solomon's Seal

Descript : The common Solomon's Seal rises up with a round stalk half a yard high, bowing or bending down to the ground, set with single leaves one above another, somewhat large, and like the leaves of the lily-convally, or May-lily, with an eye of bluish upon the green, with some ribs therein, and more yellowish underneath. At the foot of every leaf, almost from the bottom up to the top of the stalk, come forth small, long, white and hollow pendulous flowers, somewhat like the flowers of May-lily, but ending in five long points, for the most part two together, at the end of a long foot-stalk, and sometimes but one, and sometimes also two stalks, and flowers at the foot of a leaf, which are without any scent at all, and stand on the top of the stalk. After they are past, come in their places small round berries great at the first, and blackish green, tending to blueness when they are ripe, wherein lie small, white, hard, and stony seeds. The root is of the thickness of one's finger or thumb, white and knotted in some places, a flat round circle representing a Seal, whereof it took the name, lying along under the upper crust of the earth, and not growing downward, but with many fibres underneath.

Place : It is frequent in divers places of this land; as, namely in a wood two miles from Canterbury, by Fish-Pool Hill, as also in Bushy Close belonging to the parsonage of Alderbury, near Clarendon, two miles from Salisbury: in Cheffon wood, on Chesson Hill, between Newington and Sittingbourne in Kent, and divers other places in Essex, and other counties.

Time : It flowers about May. The root abides and shoots a-new every year.

Government and virtues : Saturn owns the plant, for he loves his bones well. The root of Solomon's Seal is found by experience to be available in wounds, hurts, and outward sores, to heal and close up the lips of those that are green, and to dry up and restrain the flux of humours to those that are old. It is singularly good to stay vomitings and bleeding wheresoever, as also all fluxes in man or woman; also, to knit any joint, which by weakness uses to be often out of place, or will not stay in long when it is set; also to knit and join broken bones in any part of the body, the roots being bruised and applied to the places; yea, it hath been found by experience, and the decoction of the root in wine, or the bruised root put into wine or other drink, and after a night's infusion, strained forth hard and drank, hath helped both man and beast, whose bones hath been broken by any occasion, which is the most assured refuge of help to people of divers counties of the land that they can have. It is no less effectual to help ruptures and burstings, the decoction in wine, or the powder in broth or drink, being inwardly taken, and outwardly applied to the place. The same is also available for inward or outward bruises, falls or blows, both to dispel the congealed blood, and to take away both the pains and the black and blue marks that abide after the hurt. The same also, or the distilled water of the whole plant, used to the face, or other parts of the skin, cleanses it from morphew, freckles, spots, or marks whatsoever, leaving the place fresh, fair, and lovely; for which purpose it is much used by the Italian Dames.

After the glimpse I had had of the Martians emerging from the cylinder in which they had come to the earth from their planet, a kind of fascination paralysed my actions. I remained standing knee- deep in the heather, staring at the mound that hid them. I was a battleground of fear and curiosity. I did not dare to go back towards the pit, but I felt a pas- sionate longing to peer into it. I began walking, therefore, in a big curve, seeking some point of vantage and continually looking at the sand heaps that hid these new-comers to our earth. Once a leash of thin black whips, like the arms of an octopus, flashed across the sunset and was immediately with- drawn, and afterwards a thin rod rose up, joint by joint, bearing at its apex a circular disk that spun with a wobbling motion. What could be going on there? Most of the spectators had gathered in one or two groups --one a little crowd towards Woking, the other a knot of people in the direction of Chobham. Evidently they shared my mental conflict. There were few near me. One man I approached--he was, I perceived, a neighbour of mine, though I did not know his name--and accosted. But it was scarcely a time for articulate conversation. "What ugly brutes!" he said. "Good God! What ugly brutes!" He repeated this over and over again. "Did you see a man in the pit?" I said; but he made no answer to that. We became silent, and stood watching for a time side by side, deriving, I fancy, a certain comfort in one another's company. Then I shifted my position to a little knoll that gave me the advantage of a yard or more of eleva- tion and when I looked for him presently he was walking towards Woking. The sunset faded to twilight before anything further hap- pened. The crowd far away on the left, towards Woking, seemed to grow, and I heard now a faint murmur from it. The little knot of people towards Chobham dispersed. There was scarcely an intimation of movement from the pit. It was this, as much as anything, that gave people courage, and I suppose the new arrivals from Woking also helped to restore confidence. At any rate, as the dusk came on a slow, intermittent movement upon the sand pits began, a move- ment that seemed to gather force as the stillness of the eve- ning about the cylinder remained unbroken. Vertical black figures in twos and threes would advance, stop, watch, and advance again, spreading out as they did so in a thin irregular crescent that promised to enclose the pit in its attenuated horns. I, too, on my side began to move towards the pit. Then I saw some cabmen and others had walked boldly into the sand pits, and heard the clatter of hoofs and the gride of wheels. I saw a lad trundling off the barrow of apples. And then, within thirty yards of the pit, advancing from the direction of Horsell, I noted a little black knot of men, the foremost of whom was waving a white flag. This was the Deputation. There had been a hasty consulta- tion, and since the Martians were evidently, in spite of their repulsive forms, intelligent creatures, it had been resolved to show them, by approaching them with signals, that we too were intelligent. Flutter, flutter, went the flag, first to the right, then to the left. It was too far for me to recognise anyone there, but afterwards I learned that Ogilvy, Stent, and Henderson were with others in this attempt at communication. This little group had in its advance dragged inward, so to speak, the circumference of the now almost complete circle of people, and a number of dim black figures followed it at discreet distances. Suddenly there was a flash of light, and a quantity of luminous greenish smoke came out of the pit in three distinct puffs, which drove up, one after the other, straight into the still air. This smoke (or flame, perhaps, would be the better word for it) was so bright that the deep blue sky overhead and the hazy stretches of brown common towards Chertsey, set with black pine trees, seemed to darken abruptly as these puffs arose, and to remain the darker after their dispersal. At the same time a faint hissing sound became audible. Beyond the pit stood the little wedge of people with the white flag at its apex, arrested by these phenomena, a little knot of small vertical black shapes upon the black ground. As the green smoke arose, their faces flashed out pallid green, and faded again as it vanished. Then slowly the hissing passed into a humming, into a long, loud, droning noise. Slowly a humped shape rose out of the pit, and the ghost of a beam of light seemed to flicker out from it. Forthwith flashes of actual flame, a bright glare leaping from one to another, sprang from the scattered group of men. It was as if some invisible jet impinged upon them and flashed into white flame. It was as if each man were suddenly and momentarily turned to fire. Then, by the light of their own destruction, I saw them staggering and falling, and their supporters turning to run. I stood staring, not as yet realising that this was death leaping from man to man in that little distant crowd. All I felt was that it was something very strange. An almost noise- less and blinding flash of light, and a man fell headlong and lay still; and as the unseen shaft of heat passed over them, pine trees burst into fire, and every dry furze bush became with one dull thud a mass of flames. And far away towards Knaphill I saw the flashes of trees and hedges and wooden buildings suddenly set alight. It was sweeping round swiftly and steadily, this flaming death, this invisible, inevitable sword of heat. I perceived it coming towards me by the flashing bushes it touched, and was too astounded and stupefied to stir. I heard the crackle of fire in the sand pits and the sudden squeal of a horse that was as suddenly stilled. Then it was as if an invisible yet intensely heated finger were drawn through the heather between me and the Martians, and all along a curving line beyond the sand pits the dark ground smoked and crackled. Something fell with a crash far away to the left where the road from Woking station opens out on the common. Forth- with the hissing and humming ceased, and the black, dome- like object sank slowly out of sight into the pit. All this had happened with such swiftness that I had stood motionless, dumbfounded and dazzled by the flashes of light. Had that death swept through a full circle, it must inevitably have slain me in my surprise. But it passed and spared me, and left the night about me suddenly dark and un- familiar. The undulating common seemed now dark almost to blackness, except where its roadways lay grey and pale under the deep blue sky of the early night. It was dark, and sud- denly void of men. Overhead the stars were mustering, and in the west the sky was still a pale, bright, almost greenish blue. The tops of the pine trees and the roofs of Horsell came out sharp and black against the western afterglow. The Mar- tians and their appliances were altogether invisible, save for that thin mast upon which their restless mirror wobbled. Patches of bush and isolated trees here and there smoked and glowed still, and the houses towards Woking station were sending up spires of flame into the stillness of the evening air. Nothing was changed save for that and a terrible astonish- ment. The little group of black specks with the flag of white had been swept out of existence, and the stillness of the evening, so it seemed to me, had scarcely been broken. It came to me that I was upon this dark common, helpless, unprotected, and alone. Suddenly, like a thing falling upon me from without, came--fear. With an effort I turned and began a stumbling run through the heather. The fear I felt was no rational fear, but a panic terror not only of the Martians, but of the dusk and stillness all about me. Such an extraordinary effect in unmanning me it had that I ran weeping silently as a child might do. Once I had turned, I did not dare to look back. I remember I felt an extraordinary persuasion that I was being played with, that presently, when I was upon the very verge of safety, this mysterious death--as swift as the passage of light--would leap after me from the pit about the cylinder and strike me dowpn.
