Appalachian Dreams is devoted to the notion that where we come from geographically has a profound impact on who we are, and especially, who we might become in an imaginary future. My birthplace was in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, and though my path has taken me many places far away, the existence of that place is an existence that far outweighs my own transient stay on earth. These poems, and fragments of images that poetry cannot penetrate, are about more than just Kentucky, though, or Appalachia in general--they are about technology's sudden takeover, the loss of God, the loss of nature and it's appreciation, the loss of historical perspective, and many other complexities of modern life. And above all, they are poems of someone from Appalachia trying to reconcile simplicity with inexplicability. I was born on the west side of the mountains, and now reside on the east side of them, but these thoughts, and also my heart, continue to roam somewhere in-between, where mysteries and great beauties still remain, waiting patiently to be appreciated. |
