Steven Jackson - A Writer's Journey
Welcome to my writing world where you can see where my creativity takes me.
Writing Report: Sunday April 23rd, 2006
I decided to write about an experience I had tonight at a play reading as part of my writing report. Tonight I went to a reading of a later and less known play by Tennessee Williams called Small Craft Warning. It was near the end of his writing career when many people thought he was done and the play did not help this perception. Hearing those words that he wrote, the poetics and characters, was a phenomenal experience that I have rarely had before. I heard things in this play that Williams never did in other plays like sililoquize and a gay chararcter with a voice to be heard. It brought new light into my own play on the writer and I think will propel me to finish. I am a huge admirer of him as a playwright and have found great influence from him.

However, what also made the night so amazing was staying afterwards to chat with the actors and director. I didn't know any of them, but felt compelled to chat with them as they were inviting me and others to eat sushi with them. I ate and chatted about Williams and theatre and for a moment, probably the first since I moved here, I felt as if I were a part of a theatre community. The one lady and I chatted for a long time about the writer and she was astounded about how much I knew and my own play. I felt so blessed at that moment like I was meant to be in this circle. This has been in combination with all the plays I have seen over the last week which has made me realize that I have to be here to write here. I was so excited leaving the theatre about leaving an impression on people who almost all said goodbye. It has made me feel more not than ever that I have to see this world more.
