Steven Jackson - A Writer's Journey
Welcome to my writing world where you can see where my creativity takes me.
Writing Report - Monday, December 4th, 2006

So I missed an entry last week, but definitely not for lack of writing. I handed in my revised copy of The State Of Tennessee to the Fringe Festival of Toronto for the New Play contest and it was rather exhilerating. This is the second time in a month I have entered a piece for a contest and with each play entered, I have been eagerly working on new ones. When you have a goal like a contest, writing new works seems a lot more effortless. It doesn't mean you don't write well, but the wealth of creativity seems to be greater.

I have been fairly happy with my new play called Brothers And Arms that I have been writing purely during my trips to the library. It is a piece about war and truth and the meaning of importance that lies between the roles of artists and soldiers. It's hard to describe, but I was happy this morning when I finished a first draft of the first act. There is still a lot of work to be done on it (including obviously a second act), but I'm happy with the level of maturity and the way I am writing dialogue. Hopefully I can show it off sometime.

Like I mentioned, the wealth of creativity has been great with new ideas popping up at odd times. I even started writing a small scene for another play in my writing book today about a woman who joins a gay volleyball league mostly dominated by men. It's very much just a start, but it's turning into something a little more humourous, something I have not been writing lately in my plays (I tend to be quite serious there).

Books I've Read:
1) Was by Geofrey Ryman - an odd interpretation on the myths of Oz. I enjoyed the story though it meandered more than I was hoping and it was a little disturbing about Aunty Em and Uncle Henry. Not sure I'll look the same at Oz books again, but I'm sure I can get by. Thanks to Randy for the suggestion.
