Writing Report: Canada Day, 2006 (Special)
This entry is not about writing since I was rather removed from it this week with drama at home and a visit with friends in Kitchener. Instead, I discovered a great element to being a writer: Sharing your writing with people. I had the chance in Kitchener to talk about my writing with these friends and I realized that it is a very important part of being a writer. Many times, we think that a writer is only sitting behind a computer and typing or what he puts down on paper. Well as with any art form, its becomes more than that. It becomes about the bravery to show people what you are doing. It becomes about sticking your neck out for what you do and trust that people will see its worth, maybe not as much as you, but sometimes it does happen and its amazing. I realized that I have to do more sticking my neck out and less hiding it at home. I showed these friends my work and they wanted to know more. It wasn't about being better, but about being who I am and showing what I do. I'll be getting back to work this week, hopefully finishing up another draft on Tennessee, but I'm going to send a copy of my play to these friends and see reaction. Who knows? Maybe I'll connect with something inisde of them, maybe I won't, but at least I'll have made my voice heard. Books I've Read: 1) The Marble Quilt - David Leavitt A collection of short stories from my favourite short story writer and inspiration, this book was excellent. They did not all connect with me, but they showed that some stories don't need conclusion, but a point of possible change in one's life. That's something I want to do.
