Writing Report: Wednesday, May 17th 2006
So getting back into my routine has been a struggle but doable. I have been working at the daily writing with much interruption, but getting through it. After finishing the first draft of Tennessee, I have decided to put it aside for a bit to get a perspective on it. I read a very early Tennessee Williams' play this week called Spring Storm which allowed me to see into his early world and I think it helped to see my beginning journey as a playwright. Everyone moves at their own speed in life as Tennessee did (he didn't get really noticed until 34 and much of this play was laughed at and hated).
Instead, this past week was spent typing out a short story I started a number of weeks ago that I want to include in a compilation. The story looks good, but I see that I need to work more on description and slower pace even for a short story. An interesting thought from the paper: "A book tells a story; a short story tells a moment." A strong thought that I have been focusing on. A bit of an apology: In my effort to write more, I have been avoiding the internet often, using the time only for e-mail checks and mild research. Sorry if I have been less frequent in my chat. :) Special feature: I read somewhere that to be a good writer, one must be a good reader, so here is a list of books I have read since the beginning of May and will be updated as I continue writing. 1) The Death Of Sweet Mister - Daniel Woodrell Odd little book, but great characters, about the growing up in all ways of young fat boy with a sexually charged mother and criminally abusive father. 2) Spring Storm - Tennessee Williams Early Williams play when he was known as Tom, four twentyish people dealing with public morals and insecurities of their sexuality and what it means to be in a relationship and searching for more. 3) The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown Best seller thriller about Jesus, Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail, complete plot book with surprisingly little character development, read so I could the movie out this week :) 2006-05-17 14:02:18 GMT
