Match Reports 2001

Waldron V East Hoathly Aug 12

Cricket they say is a cruel mistress they say and she spat back with avengence against Waldron C.C on Sunday. Following their crushing victory the previous week defeat was as welcome to the team as a black man at a Ku Klux Klan rally. Waldron were rocked by every teams worse enemy the inability to get eleven players to play. Waldron started the game with only eight players and even though E Hoathly had nine they won a crucial toss and batted first Roger Dann and Geoff Saunders batted very cleverly nudging for the gaps and hitting the bad ball to the ropes and soon amassed a 100 partnership. As the state of the match darkened so did the weather and it was if the good lord himself was closing the curtains on the game. Matt turned up to the match about half way through and came on for a spell that if at the beginning of the game might have made all the difference taking 4-30 E Hoathly nudged and prodded and whacked there way up to 175-6. By now they had picked up a tenth player there were to be less gaps when Waldron were batting. Like the previous week Waldron's innings started in a similar vain with Jock going relatively early and with Kevin looking to be the rock of Uckfield that the innings was to be built around. Yet again the scene was set out strode 'Flashing Blades' but alas for the birthday boy on this dank day there were to be no presents from the cricketing gods as he got a round zero. Even the Butch gloved one early on and the wickets tumbled the Rock managed to hang on in there and got another fifty but in the darkening light and the shitty drizzle Waldron's final wicket (their eighth!!!!!) fell with five overs to go and only 115 on the board. After the game it was decided that if we had had eleven the result might have been oh so different.

Waldron V Blackboys Aug 05

All did not bode well before the start of Waldron's local derby against Blackboys Q had terrible trouble getting a team together with WaldronCC being rocked by people going on holiday. On paper Waldron had what looked a weaker side than usual however cricket is not played on paper. Waldron won the toss and batted first and suffered an early loss when Jock went for 15. Matt then steadied the ship as himself and Kevin took the score on to 70 before the next wicket fell however this was the mere aperetif before the feast of the main course. As Matt departed there was a buzz all round the ground, bars emptied, beautiful women swooned as Alastair 'flashing' Blades strode to the crease. Like a young Don Bradman he set about the Blackboys attack with a relish that only the truly great can muster. There was carnage out there and the opposition must have felt there were in a war zone but there was to be only one Rambo on this day. Flashing's exuberence rubbed off on Kevin and he soon joined in the act the ball flying to all four corners of the ground there was more danger of windows being broken than the stumps as Waldron piled it on 'Flashing' got 35 glorious runs in great time and Kevin got a mere 120 but the pendulum of the match had swing Waldon's way. Waldron amassed 216-5 at tea.

Blackboys then went into bat and following an opening stand of 48, where their opener aged 107 told everyone how Blackboys were on schedule as they slipped past the 15 runs per over mark required and how easy the bowling was, slumped England style following an inspired double bowling change from Matt. He brought on Jason from the pavillion end and himself from the car park end the wickets tumbled as Blackboys were humiliated. Matt taking 6-13 Jason 4-15. Blackboys all out for 80. Waldron winning by a mere 136 runs. This weekend East Hoathly awaits can they possibly stop the Waldron jugganaut and in particular 'Flashing's' hammer who by the way is a birthday boy on that very day.

Waldron V Heathfield Park 22 Jul

Well lucky old Heathfield Park improved their dismal form of four defeats in a row against Waldron by managing to scrape a losing draw. Waldron batting first posted 187 with Joe Butcher 90 and Tim Brockelhurst 50ish the only notable scores. Heathfield Park seemed to be cruising along at 75-1 following good knocks from Chris Tavare and Clement Freud when a delivish spell of long hops and in particular full tosses from Joe Butcher accounted for three batsmen in quick succession and turned the innings on its head. Heathfield Park obviously wary of their pitiful performance over the years against Waldron then desperately tried to cling on for the draw. This they managed by blocking Waldron's last ten overs or so scoring approximately zero runs in that time. Waldron were desperately trying to speed up procedings but umpire Ticehurst with the speed of a stalegtite between overs managed to ensure that the last over set up for Jethro Delves where four wickets were required was not to be. Heathfield ending up on 115-6.
