| Most of this training information is taken from my favorite book "The Canine Good Citizen, Every Dog Can be One" by Jack & Wendy Volhard. I recomend very stongly that you eather purchase the book or check it out at your local library. It is designed to help the dog owner train their dog to pass the Canine Good Citizen test. The CGC is a certification of the AKC which is available to any dog not just AKC dogs. I feel very strongly that every dog owner should try to train their dog to this level. If you take the first year of your puppy's life to train him in this way you will have a dog that is easy to live with and one to be proud of. I will now lay out a few of the basic training tecniques taught in the book. |

When ever your dog is around you give him a reason to feel safe and able to TRUST you. Dogs live in the present, but they remember the past. If you yell at your dog when he comes to you he associates comming to you with yelling. It is difficult to remember this when he brings you something he has just destroyed. You only repremand him if you catch him in the act. CONSISTENCY is the other foundation to productive dog training. You are training him 24/7. You can not ignore bad behavior nor can you neglect to praise good behavior. You can not give him your old shoes to chew on and expect him not to chew on your brand new shoes if you have not taught him the difference. Who will be more PERSISTANT you or he? That will determine who will be the pack leader and determin the rules. Next RARELY USE THE COMMAND "NO." It is better to tell him to sit then to tell him no, for jumping. "No" really doesn't give him something to do,but sit does. Try to STAY ONE STEP AHEAD of your dog. It will save you from many stressful moment. If you can catch him just opening his mouth to chew your good shoes rather that after he has torn them up. The last key word is to TAKE CHARGE. You are the pack leader and you need to let him know that. |

Don't
Feed your dog first.
Let your dog sleep in your bed.
Let your dog restrict your access to anything in the house or take up residence in a door way.
Let your dog bound ahead of you.
.
Chase your dog yelling "come!"
Allow your dog to keep or play with the "kill." (stollen object)
Go over to your dog to give him attention.
Don't give attention when your dog demands it.
Make a fuss over your dog whenever he demands that you do so.
Give more than one command or give up.
Play games, especially tug of war, if you can't win, or give the toy to your dog after the game is over.
Give more than one command, or any command if you are not prepared to reinforce it. |

Do
Eat before you feed your dog.
Restrict access to your bedroom and furniture.
Take the shortest route to you destination and make your dog move out of your way.
Proceed first through narrow passages.
Run in the opposite direction if your dog "takes off" on a walk.
Take your dog's "kills" (stolen articles of food or objects) away from him.
Call your dog to you to give affection.
Ignore or discourage pawing, nudging and wining.
Ignore your dog first thing in the morning, when you come in.
Restrict his movements with the"long down" exersize.
Initiate games with your dog, make sure you win them and end up with the possession of the toy.
Reward your dog for completing an exersize well. |

8. To demand attention from the subordinate pack members.
9. To ignore or actively discourage unwanted attention.
10. To restrict the movement of the lesser-ranking pack members.

Once you have tought the basics, continue to retain your leadership by following a few rules.
1. Make your dog Sit before you give meals or any treat.
2. Mak your dog sit before being petted.
3. Make your dog sit and stay before going through a door. |
