NOTE: John’s
father, Ben came with his parents to Decatur Co.
in late 1830’s from Kentucky. His
wife’s parents also came to Decatur Co. with a colony of settlers also in the
1830’s. Ben enlisted
in the 37th Regiment Ind. Volunteer Infantry at the breaking out of
the Civil War, despite physical weakness, because he believed it was his duty
to go. He became ill and died of
pneumonia at Murfeesboro, Tenn. He left
a widow and three children, John W., Edward Wallace
and Belle.
The wife had a hard time getting by but managed with help of neighbors
and grandparents. She eventually was
remarried to E. E. Goodwin.

NOTE: John W. Demoss took employment in a stone quarry at
the age of
ten years as a water boy and worked way into superintendent of Harris City
Quarries. He saved his money and paid for 200 acres of excellent land in
Sandcreek Tp. In 1904 he devoted himself to farming. In 1912 was elected
Sheriff of Decatur County and was re-elected in 1914 to a second term. His son,
Grover served as deputy under him. Reference: Harding's
