6.     Alfred Thomas “Tom” Jackson (George Washington Jackson)

·         Born:                              June 30, 1864

·         Place:                              Calloway County, Kentucky

·         Died:                               May 13, 1928

·         Place:                              Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee

·         NOTE:                            Ruby Jackson took an automobile trip in the 1920’s to White House, Tennessee to visit Uncle Tom (her father’s brother). All she could tell us was that he was the head of a “college” there.

·         Job:                                 Professor at a “college”, Secretary of the White House Mercantile Corporation, which deed showed that the corporation sold a building lot in 1910 to a Mr. E.M. Mongold for $150.00

·         Note:                              Tom did not learn to read and write well until he was 20 years old.

·         Education:                     Tom attended and graduated from the Southern Normal University with degrees in Teaching, Accounting, and other subjects and was keenly interested in education.

·         Note:                              In 1900 he purchased 3 ˝ acres in White House, Tennessee and built a school. It was called “Summer-Robertson Normal College” and taught primary grades to children of the area as well as some college courses. A “college” in those days did not mean the same as a “college” in the 1990’s. It was a privately run school, staffed by Professor Jackson and his first wife, also his second wife Myra after the first wife Della died, plus other staff members. Students paid about $1.50 per month for tuition. Two counties, Sumner and Robertson, split the town of White House, and there was no public school. He purchased the school grounds of 1-˝ acres April 20, 1900. In 1917 he sold the school grounds to the Board of Education for $1,000.00 for a public school to be established, $250.00 from each of the two counties, and $500.00 raised by the citizens of White House. What he did after that is not known.

·         Clubs:                             Mason, Odd Fellow, and the Woodmen of America

·         Religion:                        There is a photo of him as Superintendent of the First Baptist Church of Gallatin, Tennessee Sunday School made in 1910. The photo was donated by an Evelyn Guill, who wrote a book “Reflections on White House”.

·         Note:                              Professor Jackson’s home was located and is still standing. It is a large, two storied house and the present house number is 204 College Street, just north of where the college stood.

·         Note:                              It is possible that his two wives were sisters, but further research is necessary.
