Jackson Jargon
Having trouble with the Jackson lingo? Here are some common terms you will see around the Jackson community.
Book Fair - This is a biannual fundraiser through Scholastic to generate support for Jackson's Media Center. Students and their families will have an opportunity to purchase books, software, posters, educational kits, and other items for themselves and their teachers. This event occurs in the fall and in the spring.
Jog-A-Thon - An annual PTA fundraiser supported by Jackson families and sponsors. Each participating student asks family, friends, and sponsors to pledge money for each lap they run in the Jog-A-Thon. Straight donations are also excepted. On Jog-A-Thon Day, each student runs with their class around the Jog-A-Thon track. Family and friends are encouraged to come support their children around the track. Students then collect money based on the number of laps around the track and/or their straight donations. Prizes are awarded based on donations collected at the Jog-A-Thon Awards Assembly.
Math Fair - An annual event to pormote mathematics in learning and encourage families to participate in their child's learning of mathematics. Each student and their family will have an opportunity to participate in mathematics games and activities, have dinner with other Jackson families, and receive materials for teaching mathematics in the home and in everyday activities.
Raja - The name of Jackson's new tiger sculpture which is displayed at the northeast corner of the school. It was created to commemorate Jackson's 50th Anniversary year in 2004.
Terrific Kids - This award is part of the Kiwanis Terrific Kids Program. It is presented monthly to top students out of each classroom. The top students are chosen by their teachers based on academic performance, good behavior, and hard work. It is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Norman at each monthly Jackson Awards Assembly.
Top Tiger Readers - This is an award given by the Jackson Media Center to participating students in the Top Tiger Reading Program. Each student will receive an award after completing the grade level reading goal. The reading program starts at the beginning of the school year and continues until the end of school.
