The head of the World Council of Churches has condemned the Australian government's policy of mandatory detention for asylum seekers. The Reverend Doctor Sam Kobia spent several hours on Thursday inspecting the Baxter immigration detention centre in South Australia. He has likened the centre to the United States prison camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba "without the shackles and the uniform".Dr Kobia says it is a great shame that a country as prosperous as Australia has such a cold-hearted mandatory detention policy."I think it is wrong, it is disgraceful and it should be stopped," he said.Dr Kobia says he visted the immigration detention centre to show support for asylum seekers. The religious leader is on Friday open the National Council of Churches forum in South Australia.
