New
York to Florida, getting settled…
Picking up from my summer
adventure of getting my instrument rating, I must continue with my story on the
schlep to Florida and getting established here.
Most of you know me well
enough to know that if there is a road trip (even to the corner), I'm the first
one to volunteer to drive! Well, it
was the same for the trip to Florida!
I was looking forward to it for a long time, and it was a pleasant (but
even a little long for me) drive.
We drove down in two cars and kept in touch with radios *thanks for
lending them Stephan!*
We
took our sweet time and got to Florida Tech just in time for ROTC move in on
Friday. For those of you who didn’t
have the inside scoop, I tried ROTC and did their orientation to see if I would
like to join up…. Long story short, it isn’t flying (pun intended). The orientation was fun though; I got
the chance to do some good old sweat-a-lot activities in the Florida sun like
rappelling, shooting, and playing with anti-aircraft missile launchers!! Yahoo me!
Since then, I’ve moved in,
and settled in. Academically, it
finally looks like things are working out for courses, and I was placed into the
commercial pilot curriculum.
Classes start Monday August 27, and the fun doesn’t end until mid
December!
I'm
excited to get started and I'm looking forward to learning something I enjoy so
much.
The
school is really neat! As it is
now, Florida Tech’s Aviation program is the “hardest to get into in the
world”. (I think they tell us this
to make us fell good about all the $$ we are burning in the name of an
education). Academics are top
notch, and instructors all have years and years and years of experience in their
respective field.
My
dorm is pretty nice, except for the cinderblock prison-like look, but that’s
going to change with some posters and stuff soon. We have a really nice view of the stairs
too! I know you are thinking, “the
stairs??”. Yes, the stairs! The ladies live on the third floor. Need I say more?
I
think the food is excellent here, but Dan, I'm sure will beg to differ! Everything else is undeniably
resort-grade, and commendable. I
love palm trees! (just thought Id
mention that). Ok, I'm not going to
beat the dead horse to death here, but, the beach is magnificent too. …ok that’s it, I promise! -JS
