The Interview

You look in the daily classified,
Trying to find suitable employment.
You put on your new business clothes,
And you look so professional
From your Windsor knotted tie
To your black polished shoes.

Your prospective employer tells you
The history of the company.
As you smile pretending interest.
As he continues
To tell you of the benefits
And how far you can advance.
And you nervously reply
That you feel confident
You can do the job adequately.

He asks you, "When can you begin?"
You tell him eagerly, "Immediately."
When just then
You are regrettably told,
"Yes, there was an opening,
But now it's closed,
Thank you for your interest."

And you leave as you came in
In a trance.
Feeling the only thing you've
With your life
Is get old.
