Son What Have You Done With Your Life Lately
(Epoch Three: 1986-1988)
When I was only three
I could finally
Tie my own shoe laces.
Which brought a grin
To my parents faces.
Ever since then
It would seem
I've been in a dry spell.
I could tell
Cause all I heard from them,
"Son, what have you done
With your life lately."
Instead of asking me
How I'm doing,
She wanted to know
What I did.
Knowing where she was coming from,
The truth I would forbid.
Instead I told her with a grin.
I was a freelance writer,
In the midst
Of completing my latest novel.
Then I went on babbling
About my travels to far away places,
None of which I've seen.
The more she believed
The more she would marvel.
They sat ignorance is bliss.
In the beginning
We shared spiritual peace
Underneath a godly tree of green.
In the end
Greed took a bite of her.
She declared she wanted a piece
Of my worldly success.
Having none to defend
I offered her no resistance
When she said good-bye.
Before she would leave
Her eyes fixed on mine,
I heard what I've heard
Again and again
"Son what have you done
With your life lately?
There have been
People I thought
Who wanted to get to know me
Until they got to know me.
Then it seems
They changed their mind.
But even worse
I suppose they think
I'm just a regrettable memory.
They say when
A ship is about to sink
The rats are the first
To flee
Well, you all can leave now
But if you think
I'm goona sink
You are all mistaken.
I don't know
Who said the above.
All I know
They are the words
I live by.
True they are unfair barter
For love.
But all I have left is to try.
I would like to believe
Someday my time will come.
She'll have faith in me,
She won't rate me.
She will inspire
My sleeping dreams
To awaken.
And in the process
If I get caught
In an impasse.
She won't ask
"Son, what have you done
With your life lately."
